    Issue with VPS configuration

    Hello

    I am a web designer who has just dived into the world of VPS. I have been using supported shared hosting for some time, and needed something better so went for a UK based 123-reg Linux cpanel VPS server.

    I have configured it at server.monkeysbrother.com on the server IP address 37.122.211.134, and am pretty sure i have set up as described to the finer details.
    However, most of the domains (after more than a week) are all intermittently losing the server connection.
    My domains are registered with 123-reg also, and I have pointed to the serevr as far as I am aware the NS1 & 2 to the IP of the VPS, and then the @, mail, www records all to the IP address too for each of the domains. I had created an A-record for the server.monkeysbrother.com too in WHM

    But after a week they are all still dropping in & out of connecting to the server! 123-reg have been helpful thus far, but are incredibly slow at getting back to me.

    One site in particular uses it to take bookings for the surf school and is loosing business to a competitor now as the emails and site keep going down - very frustrating.

    Please help a novice in need!!

    Steve

    That would be better to share the problematic domain names here (you can also PM me) so we have to check your DNS settings, looks like the problem is there.

    First of all ask your host if you have a managed server. After that share one of these websites so that I can check DNS settings. There may be a problem with DNS settings.

    Hi, thanks for this

    One example is jossbay.co.uk

    I have just had this come through from my hosts:

    The domain Jossbay.co.uk has DNS settings set up for 37.122.211.134, I've added an MX record for mail.jossbay.co.uk as well, which was missing.

    However, it's nameservers are ns1.monkeysbrother.com / ns2.monkeysbrother.com which point to 79.170.40.3 which I believe it causing conflicts.

    but if I change this back, is there settings I then need to change on the server too? in WHM?

    Alright, this domain is pointed to 37.122.211.134, mail.jossbay.co.uk is also pointed there.

    $ host jossbay.co.uk
    jossbay.co.uk has address 37.122.211.134
    jossbay.co.uk mail is handled by 10 mail.jossbay.co.uk.

    And the site works for me. Do you have any problems with this site at the moment or could you please show a problematic website?

    I don't see problems with DNS. Both are working.

    $ host jossbay.co.uk ns.123-reg.co.uk
    Using domain server:
    Name: ns.123-reg.co.uk
    Address: 212.67.202.2#53
    Aliases:

    jossbay.co.uk has address 37.122.211.134
    jossbay.co.uk mail is handled by 10 mail.jossbay.co.uk.

    $ host jossbay.co.uk ns2.123-reg.co.uk
    Using domain server:
    Name: ns2.123-reg.co.uk
    Address: 92.51.159.40#53
    Aliases:

    jossbay.co.uk has address 37.122.211.134
    jossbay.co.uk mail is handled by 10 mail.jossbay.co.uk.

    i guess this is the problem with forums that you get confllicting replies! now still not sure if there's anything wrong or not!

    jossbay.co.uk still doesn't work on all browsers here - and iphone can't find the server.

    Seems to be working from here. Could you trace the route from your computer to the server?

    That looks like you don't have DNS updated on your side or you have problems with the route.

    Please open your CMD (Start -> Run -> cmd .. if you are on Windows) and show the output of the next commands:

    nslookup jossbay.co.uk

    tracert jossbay.co.uk

    Let us know the result

    Works from here, looking like a browser cache problem on your end.

    HI,

    Please login to your SSH, and check your server load by running :-

    #top -c
    to check the top consuming services of your VPS, if you find anything unusual, then please kill that process, if you could also check if any Ddos attack are happening at your VPS, please check this by running :-
    netstat -n -p|grep SYN_REC | wc -l

    To find out how many active SYNC_REC are occurring on the server. The number should be pretty low, preferably less than 5. On DoS attack incidents or mail bombs, the number can jump to pretty high. However, the value always depends on system, so a high value may be average on another server.
