Can I use this VPS for a VPN? Is tun/tap enabled?
The answer to both questions is Yes. A VPS with VPS Unlimited would be perfect for a VPN. Since we offer Xen, tun/tap acts as it would if this were a dedicated server. You do not need to submit a support ticket asking for us to enable tun/tap, (this would be done at other companies offering OpenVZ). Tun/tap is ommited from some of our minimal install templates (including CentOS 5.5) and because of this we recommend choosing a template that already has /dev/net/tun configured for you, such as
CentOS 5.6 (both 32 & 64).
To check if your VPS is ready to install your VPN client and has tun/tap properly configured run this command:
cat /dev/net/tun
If you get this result Tun/Tap is ready for your VPN Software to be installed:
File descriptor in bad state
If you get this error then Tun/Tap is not ready for your VPN Software and you should switch to a newer template that has tun/tap pre-configured (CentOS 5.6):
