12 hrs offline thanks to 1and1 -vent

My bad I know, I should have read more about 1and1 before hosting with them.

My story so you know is that after the first month I went offline twice in a weekend thanks to their SQL Server being offline, by the time they checked it was online again and their only response to my support request was: "clear your browser cache and try again".

Then, today, 12 hrs (and counting) offline and the same old response: we're working hard to solve it.

I'm looking for other providers but I'm terrified by the billing horror histories people post about 1and1 and their cancellation nightmares.

So, wish me luck and stay away from them.

Well, just don't expect for a refund :-)

Make sure you use the proper department to cancel your account.

Good luck and make sure to chose a "suitable" host instead of listening the praise from word of mouth.

1and1 TV commercial is way better than their hosting/support.
Make backup immediately when you get access to the server.

Best of luck and keep us updated

There are number of complaints about 1and1 webhost. Now took backup as you get access and start search about new webhost but this time do sufficient research about webhost.

1and1 seem to use a lot of this answer to support questions: "clear your browser cache and try again".

Poor hosting poor support.

Their WebDBA application was giving a "server not found" error message and my application could not make a connection.

Did tech not try it him/her self? Seems like the answer came from someone who tried it and was able to connect.

1&1 is a crappy host, and "clear your cache" is a ridiculous response.
There's plenty of better hosts to choose from.

That's not the point. Its a perfectly reasonable response if the other person was able to connect. It is a web-based db manager.

It's still not a valid response. Maybe flushing your DNS cache would help if they changed IPs but not the webcache for dynamic content. The best way would be to attempt to find the sql server's IP and ping that.

Pinging would also be a good thing and maybe support did that. I don't know what 11 uses but sometimes if you are accessing the same server/systems that require different account logins with the same browser things sometimes get messed up.

The knee-jerk solution of "change hosts" is the lazy man's help.

On the other hand, its not unusual to get a new user coming in here (probably from the competition) to invent a scenario that invites host bashing. And there is no shortage of "experts" to go along with it.

I have to say... I had a mail hosting/domain registration with 1and1 (fasthosts) and they were amazing (i had a few mins downtime once or twice)

where i do hear horror stories is when people have had web hosting packages, dedicated servers, VPS's and they didn't work were offline/online all the time

cancellation's is handled by a "special" department you get a secret number/diverted to i know that from when i left them (but it was pretty painless)
