    * New TLD Coming Soon

I was curious what methods some of you use to determine when new domain names are created to buy. Like .something.

    Thanks.

It is extremely rare for a new TLD to be created.

If things go according to ICANN's plan we'll have hundreds of new GTLDs over the next few years.

    We will see!

Certainly will be interesting to see what happens with these New gTLDs.

Over time they will become more and more integrated in my opinion. They can help create a more structured web for everyone!

    Do you really think so?

I think most of them will go the same way as .travel and .museum.

One would have thought that ICANN (and the people applying for these new TLDs) would have learnt from past fiascos, but clearly not. Or maybe they're all too young to remember.

    I do!

The problem with some other TLDs is that they have come along one by one, with next to no decent publicity!

With all the attention the New gTLD programme is getting, I think TLDs created in the coming years will be much more successful.

    I do nothing.

If its something "worth" knowing about, Then it will show up on some tech websites . Digg, Reddit, Theregister , whoever.

I then think.. Would I visit something on that domain?
    Will it help me?
Ie: If i run a company selling corn and a .corn domain comes out.. Surely id want one right?

And then id look at the price. if its blatantly just there to rip me of fthen i wont bother.

.com and CC domains ( .co.uk ) / .EU are probably all i will use for the forseeable future.

That's kind of a bad example imo, in many fonts rn looks a lot like an m (a bit wide though). I do still somewhat think the .xxx TLD was a bit hilarious, though.

Why is it hilarious? I think it is one of the few new TLD's that are actually useful/necessary.

Well, it was more of the news that surrounded it. Seemed quite funny how all the fuss was made about a "TLD for Porn."

I associate all of the stuff that came with it to the TLD itself.

Lubeca hits the nail on the head. We have over 200 suffixes as it is. Is creating hundreds more going to help anything? We'll have so many suffixes that we cannot see the forest for the trees anymore.

Already at this time, some ccTLD's are hardly used (think of the likes of .tf, .vu, .pn, ...) and recently created gTLD's like .name, .museum, etc have failed to make impact.

It is clear that ICANN is just wanting to stray away from the original intention of the web (educational) and trying to capitalise on it by creating as many new suffixes as their bank account can handle. For the users, it is just going to make things more confusing. Imagine you want to visit CNN's website. Will you need to check cnn.com, cnn.us, or news.cnn ?? And then this is just an example everyone knows. Imagine when more obscure companies, or small towns all can ask their own TLD ... I predict massive chaos with internet users still sticking to .com and their country's ccTLD.

In other words: ICANN just try to fill their pockets but the internet will only become more chaotic.

The ONLY valuable new extentions I would say could be a success would be the likes of .mail, .music, .sport, ... But even that would be a question mark.

Oh, and just a small PS. While ICANN is busy creating loads of new pointless suffixes, some actual countries still are without suffix. Maybe fix that issue first before creating chaos on the web. Some examples: Kosovo, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, South Sudan, ... Maybe give these nations a ccTLD first -- at least that would get used. I doubt the average customer of let's say Pepsi will easily make a switch from pepsi.com to drink.pepsi (and even if they make the switch: it gives no added value)

Create a suffix for each country, that would make sense. But then that would bring less money in ICANN's pocket. Sad to see that an invention created for educational purposes (the internet was formed in the academical world) becoming an exploited business.

I don't know whether the market needs you TLDs. those involved in the domain registration and web hosting industry would be happy to have more products in their portfolios, but I doubt about the consumers and businesses.

Until there is strong end user demand, ICANN can push for as many gTLD as they like, and they will mostly be pointless.

(Well, not pointless, as they each have a . before the gTLD, har har.)

Point is: knowing some extentions are practically unused (.kp, .va, .tf, .pm, .vu, .nf, ...) and some others failed to fulfill the expectations when launched (.name, .biz, .travel, ...) ... do we really need another bunch of rarely used domains that few will remember? ICANN probably knows this just as well but well, the dollar sign probably is hard to resist for them. It will ultimately create chaos on the web however.

New tld offer great use to some brand owners. But it is too expensive. They can use to popularize their tld and also for trademark protection.
