SSL - startcom or someone else?

Is there any real advantage to buying a basic SSL from namecheap or one of the numerous other providers over using a free one from startcom?

For $10/year, I certainly don't mind buying a NameCheap one...I'm just wondering what the benefit is.

(I'm not talking about EV SSL).

The real advantage is to show how serious you are doing the business.

Customers also more confident and feel safe to deal with you.

Have you ever checked who the CA is for an SSL? I never have.

Seriously? Interesting. All the major browsers verify that the SSL cert is signed by a trusted provider, so I've never cared which one.

    The vast majority don't care.

I wouldn't trust a provider using a Startcom free SSL when handling personal information. I think it also says a lot about how much you value client security if you're not willing to spend a few dollars on a certificate.

If its a major purchase, I'd expect an EV cert.

Startcom requires you to use their Class 2 certificate service if you are processing any sort of e-commerce/payment transactions on the site you're getting the certificate for. (They started actively enforcing this during manual certificate verification starting later last year, read their TOS)

You should really remove the certificates for those issuers from your trusted certificate authority list. Relying on manual verification will be prone to failure.

StartSSL are Ok for things like internal use and non-customer use. They're a bit sketchy with some browsers and mobile devices. They're just as secure as any other certificate from a technical perspective though, but the "brand" isn't really suitable for client-facing work (in my opinion).

I secure my servers using StartSSL, mainly because they're free.
