This checks your reg and shows you ALL EMPTY CLSID KEYS.. (Every program gets assigned a CLSID key and if you no longer have it,the key is usually cleared (If its not deleted totally its left EMPTY))

I ran this and it found 51 "value not set" keys and i removed them all

Does CCleaner also do this? If not this might be a good addition.

    Hello,
Just a piece of advice from a seasoned desktop tech. Using a registry cleaner is like doing open heart surgery with a lawnmower. I have seen those cause more damage then good.

    Keith,

If we were on lowendtalk, I would of "thanked" that ;]

I agree to be honest, it has caused me quite a few issues in the past.

I have never had a problem with CCleaner jacking my machine. I run it regularly and swear by it.

ccleaner is what I offer all my customers, its clean and doesnt harm the computer.

    CCleaner and tuneUp utilities.
I've been recomending that 2 programs, in that order. So far no problems at all. On the newest windows there should be less problems with the registry.

CCleaner does do this, but registry cleaners don't help nowadays, I've yet to see a benchmark that shows ANY improvement at all on a modern OS. CCleaner is great for cleaning up unused/temp files though.

    Agree

In fast most benchmarks show that the performance may actually be worse

I haven't seen any benchmark testing but have heard many people complain about slow machines that improved after running a registry cleaner. That testimony is enough for me.

My "Freeware" weapons of choice are:

    Mircosoft Security Essentials (MSE)
    Malwarebytes (MBAM)
    CCleaner (CrapCleaner)
    Spybot S&D (Search & Destory)

    Ago ahead and have fun

Snake oil, beware, registry cleaners suck.

Used to get a lot of business fixing people's computers after they ran registry cleaners, but honestly glad to be out of that side of the business

Because they are unneeded. As I stated above, it is like doing open heart surgery with a lawnmower. There is no way that a program can keep up to date with every software vendor to know what is needed and what is not needed.

There is also no proven benefit to cleaning your registry. Removing select keys can help if you need to re-install buggy code but this should be a manual process. I have seen more damage from registry cleaners then fixed computers.

15 years experience and many tens of thousands of dollars fixing the mistakes they make.

Like removing all those IDs from the registry that are supposedly not used and making their apps not work, files not open and all that great stuff!

So what about those viruses/malware which hide within the registry?

A registry cleaner such as CCleaner will work 95% of the time if not then a manual clean will need to be done, Ive used CCleaner since early 2003 time and never had an issue with it infact its a piece of software which I swear by and gets installed on every machine I own or work on

Boot into safe mode and remove it, it is the best way, in every case, because many times they morph about and knowing how to do it manually will keep you from being reliant on some program being updated.

Moreover learning how they get in the registry, and how they operate helps you to know how to protect yourself better, and remove even programs that aren't bad but you don't want running all the time, it puts you in control of your machine.

Viruses cant hide int he registry, they simply add startup keys and change registry values.

Which means they can hide deep within the registry.

Hence doing a registry clean is good practice if you know what your doing...

No, the virus itself cannot reside in the registry, just paameters used to run it. The virus itself is on the local storage (normally in %TEMP%, or %SYSTEM%)

Registry cleaners should not be used as Anti-Viruses
