Can't get domain DNS to work..
Hi guys, decided to make the jump from shared to VPS, and I know nothing!! I've registered my domain names through name.com, and I got a vps from vps6. Now, I was given a single IPV4 address from my hoster, and I have no idea how to point my domains to my VPS's IP address.
I didn't get cpanel or anything like that..so I am stuck. please help

Use your domain provider DNS and then create A record point to your VPS6 IP

name.com has..
ns1.name.com
ns2.name.com
ns3.name.com
ns4.name.com
I can't add an IP address to the value box for any of those. when I go to zone management, the 4 nameservers above dissapear and all I can do is add an A record, but when I traceroute my domain it still shows ns2/3/4 and then my a name record, which doesn't work..
also, I am using a ccTLD - (.gs)

If you tracert result got A record pointed to your VPS IP, then you have to wait to get it full working.

Don't worry. It is very easy and has to be done at two stages:
(A) At name.com: (from the FAQ at http://www.name.com/faq)
Quote:
How Do I Create My Own Name Servers?
Log into your Name.com account.
Click on the 'Account' icon at the top of your page.
At your 'Account' page, click on the domain name you wish to modify.
Be sure that your domain is unlocked; to unlock, click on the padlock icon.
On the 'Domain Management' screen, click 'Manage Name Servers' in the 'Control Panel' on the right side of your screen.
Enter the prefix (e.g. ns1) in the 'Host Name' field.
Now enter the corresponding IP address.
Click 'Register'.
Note: you can create as many name servers as you'd like, but each server must resolve to a unique IP address.
Also note: the 'Register a Name Server' and 'Modify a Name Server' pages will not list the name servers you have created.
Be sure to update your current name servers. You can find detailed instructions in the section entitled 'How Do I Change My Name Servers?'.

(B) At the VPS:
Have you installed an autoinstaller? I recommend centminmod which gives you a nicely optimized package of everything you need to run a lean and mean VPS. Centminmod installs the NDS DNS server which will help you create nameservers. The FAQ is very well written.
If you don't want an auto-installer, then you should install a free control panel like Kloxo, Webmin or ISPConfig. Installing these takes only a few moments and thereafter configuring the DNS is also easy.
There is a tutorial here ( kloxo) ( webmin) ( ispconfig) which deals with that.
The whole thing is great fun but you must have the patience and inclination for that.
