We use the Greek Alphabet (but we decide against using Beta because it just brings a whole lot of confusion)

VM Nodes - xen1.hostname.com, xen2.hostname.com....
Dedicated Servers - subscription-ID.hostname.com...
Servers that are used for testing and internal stuff - it's where weird names come in (cartoon character, names of beer, cities).

Three naming conventions in use at the moment - colours, cloud types, and Aston Martin model names.

Going back to the star wars theme, I had a guy name all of his after planets from the star wars movies, I also saw some named after Star Trek Ship names.

Given we do servers clients tend to name them, but if they don't then they get named after rivers.

When we did virtual servers sometime ago we used VZ/XEN / NUM / UK/US so:
VZ1UK
VZ2UK
XEN1UK
XEN2UK
VZ1US
VZ2US
XEN1US
You get the idea, just easy and logical

I used to name my servers after ships in Star Trek. Now I use planets and moons of the solar system.

We name our nodes by superhero characters, since that is our theme as it is. I wonder what the possibility of running out of character names is?

As we are using servers across multiple countries, we recently shifted to this naming convention -
2 Character country code - 3 character city/airport code - 2 character datacenter name - srv - server number in digits.
It leads to long names, but one look tells us who we need to contact in case of issues.
Example -
US-AVL-ID-srv30.leapswitch.com
Ishan█ LeapSwitch Networks Pvt. Ltd. - Managed VPS / Dedicated Servers India
█ CloudJiffy PaaS - Wordpress Cluster Hosting
█ Shared, Reseller, VPS, Dedicated Servers, Colocation
█ AS132335 - India - USA - Germany - Spain - Portugal - Ukraine
