recent high server load and crashes

Hi, have server that a few weeks ago started to become very overloaded, leaving the server up (ping), but no services worked and required a reboot.

Leaving an ssh session open with top showed server running at 70 and all memory and swap being used.

I made sure that the OS (ubuntu 8.04) and control panel (plesk) were upto date, but still the same issue.

The sever runs a few sites that are mainly static low bandwidth (100mb month) with one drupal site doing about 4gb a month.

I made some changes to my.cnf and apache2 config to try and help reduce load and memory usage. This helped with load as it is only getting to 10/15, but was still using all memory and swap. To help with this i created swap file and added this to system with low priority in fstab.

The server is an

Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00GHz
2gb ram
2gb swap
20gb swap file

Server is currently at load of approx 4

clearing cache can help a little sometimes.
Code:
sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

usage is has not changed over last few months and this server spec should be able to manage the traffic fine.

We have installed drupal boost module that presents static pages to anonymous users (most of our visitors are) but this not making much of a difference.

I did notice some errors in apache log:
Code:
"OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0" 200 - "-" "Apache (internal dummy connection)"
Made some recommended changes to apache2 conf and added this to .htaccess
Code:
# make sure internal dummy connections don't make it into logs
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^.*internal\ dummy\ connection.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule .* - [F,L]

Also notice that when under heavy load there was crawler on the server, nearly always baider spider, so added this to all .htaccess as well.

Code:
#block spider
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^Baiduspider [NC]
RewriteRule .* - [F]
#
#Block bots.

max_connections         = 200
table_cache             = 1800

query_cache_size        = 128M
quick
quote-names
max_allowed_packet	= 16M
key_buffer		= 16M

apache2.conf
Code:
Timeout 300
KeepAlive On
MaxKeepAliveRequests 100
KeepAliveTimeout 15

<IfModule mpm_prefork_module>
    StartServers          5
    MinSpareServers       5
    MaxSpareServers      25
    MaxClients          100

The slowness would simply be due to the server going into swap and the I/O load grinding the server to unresponsiveness, you can see that in your "top" output at the i/o wait column at 69.7%.

I can't see what is using all memory from your output, though the output provided does not reflect the system as the "top" output appears to be truncated due to it not showing the mysql process.

Thanks for reply, below is the output of top when server has been at high load.

I understand that using swap will slow things down, but i am at a loss as to why it has just started when logs show no increase in page hits?

As to memory usage, is there anything i can do to reduce memory by fine tuning apache and mysql. If need be will upgrade server, but want to make sure it not something that can be sorted out with some tuning.

Your server is swapping a lot. Add more RAM or try to optimize the OS or/and start using more light and optimized versions of web server and database server.

Hi and thanks for reply, yes i know it is using swap, but why is using more memory when there has been no change in the amount of page hits and bandwidth use as previous months, when it work fine?

A server upgrade is on the cards, but need to get through the period of getting this sorted out.

Can i make change to apache2 and mysql to reduce memory usage?

For the sake of the server I'd never recommend using Plesk CP on low end servers.

I don't think there is "really" something can be done by tuning the web server or mysql in order to reduce the memory usage.

It is a very well known thing that Plesk is eating up the memory.

I believe you can solve this issue with a high end virtual server, along with ssd drive, and 2-3g memory for sure.

Cheers.
Vincent.

max clients of 100 is too many for apache on a 2gb ram server. When you use more connections in apache, you use more memory. If you run out of memory, then things run slow because you're using swap. When things run slow, each apache connection takes longer to process, and you'll need more apache connections to handle a given amount of traffic. More connections = more memory use = slower server = more connections. It's a death spiral. A single apache connection for a php script can use 10 - 20mb of ram. Add in memory use for mysql and the operating system, and it's easy enough to run out and hit the tipping point to a death spiral even if you just momentarily have a spike in users. Lower your apache connections, increase the available ram, reduce the ram mysql uses, or some combination of these, and you'll see an improvement.

The following might help a little:

Code:
service portmap stop
my.cnf
Code:
wait_timeout 		= 60
key_buffer		= 128M
max_allowed_packet	= 16M
thread_stack		= 128K
thread_cache_size	= 200
max_connections         = 300
table_cache             = 1800
query_cache_limit       = 4M
query_cache_size        = 128M
quick
quote-names
max_allowed_packet	= 8M
key_buffer		= 8M
interactive_timeout	= 60
skip-innodb
apache2.conf
Code:
Timeout 30
KeepAlive On
MaxKeepAliveRequests 10
KeepAliveTimeout 2

<IfModule mpm_prefork_module>
    StartServers          4
    MinSpareServers       4
    MaxSpareServers       8
    MaxClients           64
    MaxRequestsPerChild 5000
</IfModule>
And, in case you use an external DNS and not the one on your server:
Code:
service named stop; service bind9 stop; service bind stop

Solution to the crashes

I've experienced same problems like you. I eventually fix it by installing Eaccelerator. I guess it has something to do with MaxSpareServers and MinSpareServers but though I tried tuning those values. The Apache overloading the CPU at times continued. It is already two days since I installed Eaccelerator PHP module and, all is much better thanks God I haven't had those crashes since then.
I've blogged on this too, explaining a bit more details on how to install eaccelerator and what used to be my server configuration where I got issues etc. You might want to check my post here - pc-freak.net/blog/install-eaccelerator-php-cacher-decrease-cpu-load-debian-squeeze-gnu-linux/
