Got my Galaxy S2 Skyrocket...now what?
I've used the Android OS before and am quite familiar with it. However, I want to be like the cool kids and gain root access. Not sure what I'll do with it, perhaps I'll be able to completely remove these pesky AT&T apps that don't have an 'Uninstall' button.
Anyway...I've no clue where to look, what tools I need, nor what the overall concept even is.
Anybody want to point me in the right direction?

lol. There's about 50 different ways, I don't know which is safe. I'm seriously afraid of bricking this thing.
I'm browsing a few different places and just going to read for several days until I figure out how everything works before I go messing around the filesystem.

XDA dev forums!!
Install clockwork recovery mod.
Then start flashing zipped roms until you find one you like. Ice cream sandwhich time!!
I have the T989 and my sister has the I727. Both flashed. Really the best way to improve any Android device... overclock, undervolt, root, install a Linux chroot, etc.
Enjoy your phone.
EDIT: Forgot to mention... I flashed the clockwork recovery mod with the Odin tool using Windows. Had to find a Windows computer for this, lol! After that, just copy the zip to your sdcard and flash from the clockwork recovery mod.

Just enjoy your stock phone for the moment. Familiarize yourself with Android first, and read thru XDA. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1
If you want to remove some bloatware from your phone, root it. If you don't like Touchwiz, flash a custom ROM.
Just remember, before you do anything, always make a Android backup first.

I don't know if I want to do anything to this. I've spent a good 5 hours choosing the applications and customizing and organizing my home screens.

"Universal Androot" app ia safe way to root your handset. Supports most of the Samsung models, but check and ensure whether it support yours and try it if it does.

Just to add, rooting your handset will not remove any of the installed apps or customizations that you have done.

You can save "nandroid" backups of your entire phone setup. It stores a perfect image of how you have your phone so if you flash a bunch of new ROMs and such you can always just restore your old image if you'd like. There's no reason not to explore the options out there. I guarantee once you try a high quality custom ROM you will never want to go back to stock
Just read one thing at a time. Best place to start would be on XDA under the skyrocket subforum. Read the wiki materials to get up to date on the best methods for your particular device. All android phones are a bit different, so it's good to read info specifically for your device only.
Good luck and happy flashing!

Nice! Thanks for the nandroid tip. That's exactly what I was looking for to feel safe.

Look through the XDA forums, CF-Root tutorial used Odin. Really straight forward.
