WHT had done what on my email?

Hi guys, no offence here but just bring up the thoughts.

My university email address is just new, and we use it for internal communication. But once I use this email to register on WHT(Only WHT registered), I start getting in Junk Mail: Penis Enlargement, Viagra, etc.

Question is: How did my email address leak out?

Spam bot programs guessing/generating combinations of names?
Malware on your computer?

Too many other ways to blame WHT.

Yup, like what gorf said, maybe it was just a coincidence that you got those spam when you signed up for WHT.

Have you by chance posted your email publicly?

Hello,
WHT is a legitimate business and would not dare jeopardize its reputation by selling your email address externally.

At worse, I get a few emails about hosting related specials but they come from WHT directly.

I will assure you that if you are getting these messages, they are not coming from WHT

I'll double that assurance. And even bump it up a bit by stating, they are not coming from anyone WHT has sold or given your email address to.

So you are saying that WHT sells/gives member email addresses away?

I think you need to read it again.

If you want to start some conspiracy crusade around it, have at it.

I am pretty sure the answer is no, however WHT does use them with its partner sites to deliver Industry News, such as the Search Marketing Standard. These partner sites are all owned by iNet interactive, who also owns WHT,

Well the way you said it seems to imply that you do. If you don't, why wouldn't you just say that in the first place?

Just to confirm: Does WHT or does WHT not sell or give away member email addresses?

I understand that the addresses are given away to other iNet sites, that's to be expected, but the whole "anyone WHT has sold ... your email address to" made me wonder

Not trying to start a conspiracy crusade, just asking a question

I also agree, SoftWareRevue, that is poor way of wording that sentence. It does make one seem to think you do

(however, I know that my email address has always been secure in WebHostingTalk's hands)

There was an email problem a long time ago but that was before you signed up.

Is it possible you posted your email address on this forum and some bot picked it up? Or someone at the university being a joker and signing users up for viagra spam?

I think what you will find is that SWR is not saying they do not share email addresses with others, even if they do it is certainly not with people that send you that rubbish.

Nope, my email was not posted out, neither used by anyone else. Just right after one or two days after signed up, spam coming in. I don't where it comes from other than WHT.

Not WHT I can assure you of that. My guess is there's a problem within your University's mail system that caused you to get those e-mails. Ask your university's IT department about the issue.

I hope not WHT. It's is fine. Spam is everywhere.

I did not get any spam before and 3 years this address been used. Ok it may be just leak out, or generated bot right after I sign up WHT.
