Private Nameservers in Plesk 10.4.4
Hey All,
** Begin introduction **
Firstly to introduce myself, I'm Ryan, and I have been a PHP/MySQL enthusiast for a long time. I have had various boxes over the years, but always Linux. For peripheral reasons (new project) I have found myself with Windows Web Server 2008 R2 running IIS 7.5 with Plesk 10.4.4 - and this is where my nightmare begins.
** End introduction **
I've managed to get everything up and running, however, when checking my NameServer settings using various tools online I can see that my domain takeawaystreet.com has no nameservers registered to it. At the registrar end, the nameservers are set to: ns1.takeawaydns.co.uk and ns2.takeawaydns.co.uk (I also own takeawaydns.co.uk and wish to use it as a nameserver domain for my various websites)
TakeawayDNS.co.uk - at the registrar end:
ns1.takeawaydns.co.uk -> dedicated IP on my server 111.111.111.111
ns2.takeawaydns.co.uk-> dedicated IP on my server 222.222.222.222
This is where I am stuck. Having used WHM/cPanel for donkey's years, this has always been a piece of cake. Plug and play if you will. Create A records on the server for ns1 & ns2 inside the client account (for takeawaydns.co.uk) and then in the account for TakeawayStreet.com I create two NS records for the same domain which point to ns1.takeawaystreet.com and ns2.takeawaystreet.com
However, in Plesk I am absolutely lost. I have read countless tutorials online (7 differing tutorials completed thus far) and still the online tools are reporting NameServer errors.
I really am at my wit's end. Can somebody (and I know this is a HUGE ask as you all have businesses to run) please give me a run through of how I can make sense of this. A link to a working tutorial that is appropriate to my config would suit me fine, because Google has not been my friend on this one.
I don't even know if Plesk needs to have options changed to even make it possible to be a DNS server... I feel like I am starting my Web Learning Journey all over again. I am baffled.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
Ryan

Ryan,
Two things, Plesk's default Zone does not have A records for NS1 and NS2.
1) Log into your Plesk control panel as admin.
2) Click on the Websites & Domains tab.
3) Click on the DNS Settings button.
4) To add a DNS entry, click the Add Record icon and fill out the record information on the next page.
You will need A records for NS1 and NS2 that point to the IP addresses for each nameservers you setup.
Second, make sure the DNS service is running.
1) Log into your Plesk control panel as admin.
2) Click on Server tab.
3) Click on Services Management from the Server Management area.
4) Verify (and start, if needed) the DNS Service.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your quick response.
I added the A-Records as you suggested from the client panel. You said "each nameserver you setup" is this something I haven't done? How do I do this?
Bind is running, and I restarted it after making the changes in the client panel, but sadly online services are still suggesting there are no nameservers...
Oh heck...!

I think I misunderstood you a little about what you already had setup for takeawaystreet.com. Do you already have your domain takeawaystreet.com setup at the domain registar to point to ns1.takeawaystreet.com and ns2.takeawaystreet.com?
If you have not done that, you will need to go to the registar for takeawaystreet.com and have them setup ns1 and ns2 with the IP's for your server. Then you point takeawaystreet.com to ns1.takeawaystreet.com and ns2.takeawaystreet.com. On the server you have A records for ns1 and ns2 setup in the Zone for takeawaystreet.com. This will allow you to host the domain on your custom nameservers on your server.
Alternatively, you can "park" your domain at the domain registrar and just point the domain's A record to your server's IP. If you do this you can turn off the DNS service on the server if you want as DNS will be run at you registar.

HI Mike,
Thanks, yes. That's what I thought - I have it all set up and it is working. Well, it seems to be working: web traffic is getting to the address, however, all the online tools suggest that there are issues with the configuration...? I'm not entirely sure why...!
Interesting. At least it works, but I am confused as to why it is showing errors. Maybe Plesk is as easy as WHM/cPanel after all... Hmmm

Ryan,
When I do a DNS lookup for takeawaystreet.com I am seeing the nameservers ns1.takeawaydns.co.uk and ns2.takeawaydns.co.uk still and not the nameservers based on your domain; however, the domain is resolving to a site properly.
What errors are you still getting?

Actually, that is what I want. I want it to be ns1.takeawaydns.co.uk - not ns1.takeawaystreet.com - sorry if I wasn't clear - It was working 80% of the time, but some ISPs were not resolving the domain.
So I did a nameserver lookup thing on Pingdom, and it came back with errors. I think most of them are resolved now.... MOST. Fun and games, eh?!!
Thanks for your help Mike
