    * Raspberry Pi as a Web Server?

If you don't know what Raspberry Pi is, google it. Can the Raspberry Pi be used a web server, maybe using Nginx?

It is honestly WAY to small to be used as a web server.. But that is just my opinion.

If you're careful about RAM use, absolutely. You wouldn't run a huge website on it, but you should get decent performance for many thousands of daily visitors. Plenty of people are already running sites on a 256MB VPS.

exactly. not sure if it will last. yet its pretty pricey for such a small device.

I'm really tempted to try it. Lets say you have one for every 2 websites, I think it may work. It should be very cheaper than most VPS's. Obviously for home use.

It should be plenty powerful to run smaller sites. Probably not something you want to put into production, but it'd be a fun project for personal sites.

Have you seen what you get for $25/$35? I don't know of anything with the same functionality at that price point.

They most definitely can be used as a web server, but don't expect to host a high traffic site on them. I can see them being used, along with special software, packaged to perform a certain task. Maybe a web interface for your home automation system for example.

I'm sad they sold out, I want to buy a couple to mess around with.

Absolutely you could. For a small site it would be absolutely fine.

The typical LAMP server will be very slow on this device.

An alternative is to use BarracudaDrive, which is an application server designed for resource constrained systems.

The Raspberry Pi version is available here:

With it's low power requirements, a Raspberry Pi would make a great little 'location specific' web server for a hot spot at a music festival or something.

Finally got mine yesterday, hopefully I'll have a chance to get it loaded up this weekend and see how it works as a web server.

It's around 5W, the same as the SheevaPlug.

    my little server

i've had my raspberry i running for a few days now, and have set up a little server 24/7
feel free to visit and judge its performance, its served from an adsl connection in the uk

    adream.homeunix.com

it pulls 3 watts, and appears extremely stable as long as you dont try to get too much current from the usb ports

apache2, php, mysql where easy to install, haven't quite sorted out an email server on it yet

    cheers

If I am not mistaken, I read that the factory board doesn't come with a Real Time Clock. So if accurate time & settings are important and you shut off your Pi, then you'd want to buy or build an addon RTC (not yet available).

Well done, that page loads quickly for me, I'd never know the setup if you hadn't said it.
