What's server requirement for hosting WHT
I always wondering what kind of server spec and network do I need to run a popluar forum like webhostingtalk.com?
such as CPU speed, Memory and hard drive size, and bandwidth?

A high end forum's server setup would be two server (web + database)
ideally would be a or dual Quad core processor with 16GB memory and 2TB HD each. Get a 1GB port on web server would be nice too.

WHT runs on some hands and feets-ful of servers.

A large forum and using spinning disk drives and 1 at that? That would be suboptimal on so many levels.
I believe this forum is ran on a load balanced solution (This information is around if you search long enough)
Which doesn't tell us much since more than one site is on it I believe. Doesn't matter though if only WHT was on it. Every single forum has different modules which uses different levels of resources. You could compare two forums that have identical visitors and posts daily and they would be both using two totally different levels of resources. One being heavily optimized the other not. Or one not allowing images in signatures and another one allowing it.
And if you buy the latest VB forum software, it's a different version than WHT too. And that's even assuming you get VB.

With the kind of load and traffic that such a site like WHT handles, it would be good to factor in a load balance or failover setup as well.

I would expect that WHT is on a cluster of servers.

Thanks for all the answers.
Now, how much will it cost to have load balancer or failover setup?

There are so many factors in place that anyone giving you an answer is simply misleading you.
Different server specifications come into play, the amount of bandwidth being used or certain setups may require different load balancers that cost more. The location you are hosting will make a difference and possibly by a considerable amount.
Different load balancing types. Hardware and software based. Different load balancer management levels etc.
I assume you are starting a forum and hope that it becomes as large as WHT?

I think replacing the SCSI or SATA to SSD is the best.
As Techjr quoted, you can't expect great performance for a great site with these spinning disks

Just to clear up what WHT's running, nothing much has changed since Mat disclosed what he can disclose in this thread.

This should give you an idea of the type of server/s that are used at a popular and busy forum: http://www.shawnhogan.com/2006/06/th...look-like.html
I'm fairly certain that at its peak DP was probably one of the largest and busiest VB forums around.
These were installed around 5 years ago and are still in use to the best of my knowledge.
