    BigBrainHost review

    Greetings everyone!

I've recently bought a business class VPS1 from bigbrainhost. A couple of members contacted me asking for opinion on them, so I thought I write a review here. I'll try to update this threat as I continue my hosting with them.

I was with site5 before. I've been with site5 for about 8 years. I was using their excellent shared hosting, but lately they contacted me compalining that my site is using too much cpu time. So I had to buy their VPS2 plan. But there prices are high for my budget ($65/month). So I started later looking for a cheaper host. I came accross BBH, read a few reviews abou them here, and decided to buy a VPS.

I've migrated my sites over to my vps with them.
The VPS is fast and stable. No downtime so far..
Support is friendly, polite and fast (between 5min to 4 hours max so far)
    WHP/cpanel working fine.
I gave them the FTP location of my cpanel backup and they migrated me successfully with no glitches.

MY SoluVM control panel showed that I was using 80% ram. I contacted them and they optimized mySQL, and the memory usage dropped to 40%
My main site gets about 2500 unique visitors per day. Memory usage is always below 50% (below 500mb out of 1gm ram).

My VPS1 has 1gb ram, 1gb burst, 80gb disk space, 1.4tb bandwidth and WHM/cPanel, fully managed, all for $24.71/month. Checkout their offer here. I think their servers are from limestonenetworks.com

I recommend them if you're looking for a cheap yet good managed vps. Their current offer gives you double ram/disk space and triple bandwidth, plus 25% discount for life.

    Best wishes.

(ps. where do I verify my domain for this review?)

I also recently upgraded to the BBH Managed Business Class VPS 1 for $24.71. I haven't had time to write a review, but I previously had their shared hosting for about 8-10 months. No complaints here and the migration went exceptionally well. They (Brian, Cathie & team) worked with me to do it over the weekend so there would be no client interruption on the site.

A WHT member asked me how fast my BBH VPS. I used host-tracker.com, which loads your site from 45 different worl-wide locations.
Here is the result for my main website hosted in my BBH VPS:

    Received responses: 45 Ok
    Response time: 1.78 sec

I've heard some great things about BBH, I would try them however I'm capable of sys admin. Can anyone tell me if they give you full root access?

I'm using pingdom.com free excellent monitoring to see how good is my vps with bigbrainhost.
Here are the results after 3 weeks (monitoring http server every 1 minute):
    Uptime: 99.86%

    Downtime: 43m 59s

The average downtime length: 3m 8s
    Number of downtimes: 14

The longest downtime was 12m and the shortest was 59s
What do you think of these figures? excellent? good? average? below average?
I'm asking because I'm new to vps (was using shared hosting before).. and because its time for my next invoice.
I'm using the vps for my critical sites, where I get some revenue from adsense.

    Hello,

Please send us the Pingdom report to our helpdesk. I'll have someone examine why you are experiencing less than 100% uptime for your virtual machine.

Just wanted to let you know, we've received your ticket [!KPU-428-64069] and we'll look into what is going on -- 43m of downtime is quite high for our virtual machines. I'll make sure that the technical team communicates any issues via the ticket.

    Regards,
    Brian

Thanks Brian, He did contact me. He offered to optimize my vps to reduce memory usage and avoid hitting memory max. I hope this improves uptime in the coming weeks.

    Many thanks.

    My site is DOWN!
Your support reduced my php memory limit from 256m to 16m!
Is that what's optimizing is to you?
I started a new ticket to fix the site down, only to be shocked by a reply from Chris Berry saying "Please don't spam our helpdesk"!!
Is that your response to a site down ticket?

    Hi Sallam,

As we already had agents working on your other ticket opening new ones is counter productive and only delays our ability to assist you with the issues you are having.

Please see a copy of the ticket below:

    "Hi,

As per KPU-428-640** please don't open multiple tickets for the same issue as it will only result in a delay in assisting you.

    Best regards,
    Chris Berry

As you can understand opening multiple tickets for the same issue can cause confusion.

Hope this helps to clear up any confusion you may have had about my response.

    Best regards,

    Chris Berry

I did Open a single "site down" ticket. The other response of mine was a reply to helpdesk informing me that they have optimized my vps by limiting php memory from 256m to 16m.

My site is still down. I hope that you care for site down tickets more than your trying to behave your clients. I'm not used to such language from hosts.

@Sallam, what are you running on your VPS that you're having these issues? I haven't had any problems with my VPS1...or support?

Also, WHT isn't big brain's help desk, you should probably keep the discussion on the ticket there.

Thanks Brian. The issue was fixed.
Downtime lasted for 1h 17min, all because a tech support member reduced php memory limit unnecessarily from 256m to 16m. Don't know why it took them that long to reverse it back.

As promised, here I'm to give you all an update to this review.

I've left bigbrainhost, because of several reasons:
    - site went down about 30 times for the last 48 hours, between 1~3 minutes each.
    - each time a cron tab backs up a database memory maxes and server crashes.
    - memory usage is high at all times
    - somehow there are 50gb in mysql, although my databases are only 5gb in total.
    - a simple db tables check or optimize crashes the server and site goes down.
    - instead of fixing the reasons why memory maxes at all the time, I was asked to upgrade my vps. And even then, it still crashed on me on a simple db optimization or check tables.

It seems that they are not very good at initial setup and optimization of VPSs.
My memory usage started at 40-45% before migrating a single file of db.

But maybe Its just my bad luck. Other clients here are totally satisfied with them. Their support is friendly and helpful. But I think they need to pay more attention to vps setup and optimizing, to bring down the constant high memory usage, and the weird mysql reading DBs 10 times their actual sizse. My current KnownHost VPS has less than half the memory I had in BBH, yet memory usage is now just around 35%, running the same sites and databases. The total cpmove file of the entire whm was 23gb (6gb compressed), yet in BBH power panel it showed 70gb disk usage!
