PDA Yay or Nay

I am thinking about getting a Dell Axim. I am wondering what all can be done with them. I know some things, but have some questions.

I go to school a good distance from the house and have to work on assignments in my time between classes and sometimes I can't get a computer in the lab. Would this be a fairly inexpensive alternative.

1. Can I connect to the internet through a cell phone?

2. Is there a network card for the PDA available to hook into the school's network?

What I don't want is a $350.00 address and appointment book.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I bought 2 palms and I ended up selling them.

They are great if you got a nextel that you can hook it up to the net with.

I like the Sony one that dell has, but no point unless I could get it on the net.

Yeah i just use my nextel for the net stuff..

i dont hava a pda and i will give you my opinion on this even though it may not be what you are looking for...

back in the day when before i got my nextel, i was looking at the palm i705, as it had wireless internet.. and i was gonna do all my crap on [it]. well after researching prices ( i dont know what they are now.. ) i figured i would get the cell phone.. heres why:

The palm was about 400 bucks at the time.. and for any wireless net worth buying, you would need the $45/mo plan for unlimited (not to mention it was on the cingular network, which sucks)... and well you get the point on the palm plan...

the nextel phone was 300 at the time.. and for 10 bucks on top of the cell plan.. you got unlimited internet.. so for 50 bucks a month.. .i was getting cell service.. AND the wireless net...

--

i have considered getting a pda multiple times.. thinking i would use it.. and decided i shouldnt get it... where i work.. we bought 10 palms.. 4 of which are still actually being used and not sitting in a desk somewhere...

good luck in your decision

I started using a Palm about 3 years ago and graduated to a pocket PC about 2 years ago. I wouldn't want to live without mine for sure.
I'm on the road all day and have 2000 contacts, my complete schedule for the past 2 years, 100 WMA files , over 100 photos, and all my emails and notes and tasks..... all in my pocket!
I used to carry pieces of paper and was always looking for phone numbers etc...now everything is in one place and it's also backed up on my Outlook program on my desktop. Love it.

BTW, I also carry a Nextel phone, their service is great here.

The last time I tried Nextel's wireless internet service it was pretty bad. It took forever to navigate, very slow and I couldn't be bothered with it. I cancelled it.
I could always get a cable and connect my Autiovox Maestro with my Nextel phone, but I really don't have a use for wireless internet at the present time.
I use AvantGo to download webpages everytime I sync with my desktop. It does what I need it to do. Yahoo is great for local movie schedules, weather, sports, and news.
If there's something like another "911" I'm sure that I won't need wireless internet to keep up with stuff like that.

personally, i had a PDA and never used it, cost me £250 and i lost it somewhere cos i didnt use it.

I think you need clear cut reasons to use PDAs and make sure you cant use anything else for what you plan on using it for.

I am looking to purchase 25 IPaq PDAs for the company i work for, we have a clear cut reason to use them, web browsing and printing quotes on the road and communcating with the office.

we are getting the bluetooth ipaq and the bluetooth mobiles and using them for sales reps on the road.

its a clear cut reason that nothing else could be used for.

dont buy a PDA just cos it looks good, like i did originally.

Ive got an ipaq h5455, I use bluetooth to connect to a sony ericcson t68i phone then I can send e-mail, admin servers from anywhere.

I also use wifi to network with my home computer, then I can chat on msn and aol from my garden, living room etc.

Just wish there was some live chat software that would work on it so I could speak to customers etc..

can you disable the biometric reader on the 5455? that's the only thing holding me back from buying one (other than the price)

A nice, small, color PDA isnt bad. But also have a laptop with you.

I use my PDA for everything from FTP/SSH to playing Quake on the road.

If you have a reason to buy one, buy one, if you dont have a reason buy one anyway, just so you can surf where ever you please.
