Quote On Dedicated Server
How much would it cost for a starting web hosting company that has only 100 clients to buy a dedicated server. I am looking for atleast 4GB RAM and 2TB Bandwidth. How much would it be? And where would I buy it?

This should be possible between 150-200 USD.
Would you also require management or do you have enough knowledge to manage the server also?
I'm not saying that you can't find it cheaper, but if it's the core for your business I wouldn't save too much on price, certainly in the beginning when you have a reputation to build up» www.InstantDedicated.com - Online in no time

This is a pretty loaded question. The cost of a server with the limited requirements you've presented could be nominal compared to the costs of actually starting up a company. This seems to be a two part question, one part more suited for the 'Running a webhosting business' section.
For just the server- You can get a low end dedicated server with 4GB RAM and 2TB bw for $75-$100/month, maybe less. But as someone else mentioned, there are other questions you may need to answer prior to getting the most accurate estimate (i.e., do you require management, how much disk space will you need, will you require a RAID array, where does the server need to be located, etc).
Do you currently have 100 customers? If so, what are you currently hosting them on?

It largely depends what you're doing. Some customers like the provider to be less involved; for example, provide me with the box, install the OS, and I will do the rest. The less involved the provider, the more cost effective it will likely be for you.
Alternatively, if you're looking to drive cost down even further, maybe you should look into colocation. Buy your own box, provision it as you wish, and then go on to find a provider to host with.
If you buy your own box and manage it yourself, you could colocate it easily for $75 - $200 / month, depending on location, including your bandwidth requirements.
It the end the things you end the things you need to consider are:

Now a days you will get a 4GB RAM server easily for less than 100 USD. But it always depends on what all add-on's you need, like cPanel, Management etc.

4GB RAM and 2TB Bandwidth server is common and low configuration for hosting server. the cost is around $200 depends the service provider. But I would suggest you increase the specs for live hosting purpose.

Good grief..
Make sure you are comparing apples to apples.
You can expect to pay a lot more depending on your learning curve.
If you are asking questions as basic as this without any idea what is required aside from specs, it's a given you'll likely require some hand holding at the very least.
4GB ram and 2TB of transfer on a decent triple or quad core machine will run you in that $100 to $200/mo. range.
That does not include a control panel or management.
Throw those things in and your more in that $150-$350/mo. range depending on what options you require.
My advice? Don't listen to 99.9% of the people here.
When you look through the offers forum look carefully for providers who've had a web site presence for more than 3 months.
If its super cheap, its likely crap.
Keep an eye out for web sites that have a template using Apple G5 Servers (you'll see literally hundreds of them.
The fly by night offers and companies here is more rampant that DP and getting worse.
Good luck. There are still some providers here nestled in the marketing forums that are worth their weight in gold.█ Jeremy Kinsey (jer@mia.net) - 262-248-6759

This is a open ended question really.
For 100 clients, now main question everyone is forgetting to ask, now how many websites are you hosting. You could have 100 clients with 2000 websites.
But a server with 4GB ram and a dual or quad core even the low end's will be able to handle this.
Unless you have more than a few of those websites with high traffic. Those sites require a little bit more resources then others.
Are you hosting the database software on the same server or a different server? This makes a VERY big difference when dealing with that many websites.
Databases need ram to run right, and most out of the box database configs, lets say if your going with mySql won't be able to handle 100+ connections at the same time on 4GB of ram. Your need to custom configure it in order to handle them. And 4GB won't be enough if you do have 100+ connections at the "same time".
So there are a lot of stuff on that has a question mark on the other side of the =.
So back to your basic question, can you, yes, should you no, how much, 50 to 75 low end dedicated. 100 to 200 mid range.
Cpanel normal is 35 to 45 a month + your what ever else your needs are.
So you looking between 50 to 350 range. Lower you go with your budget the more overloaded your server is going to be.

And obviously you put yourself in the "0.01%"-box and the "some providers"-box?
Don't get me wrong, I totally agree with both ends. This can be done cheap, however it can also be done expensive, but that (usually, some exceptions exist) also comes with benefits. The exact question asked by DotPop does indicate that some sort of management is a must, but even that could be cheap with a company like PlatinumServerManagement (assuming cPanel hosting here).
Going cheap can result in a horrible experience, but it could turn out well (enough) surely. Going expensive has the same options, it could go very well (and hopefully it would), but even the most expensive companies don't always work out the way you'd want to (often caused by certain restrictions due to the kind of management provided by said company).
With the information that is currently provided by the topicstarter there is no way to give a straight forward & perfect advice, as that would be based on gambling and guessing at this point.Last edited by Robert vd Boorn; 03-13-2012 at 01:46 PM.
