Softlayer changing VMware ESX license charges
Has anyone else received notice from Softlayer that it is changing fees on licensing of VMware ESX server?
They are changing from a flat rate of $50 per virtual machine to charging $15 per GB of RAM allocated to (or reserved for) Virtual Machines, for up to 24GB of RAM.
I know the VMware charges per GB of RAM under ESX v5 but under v4 it does not have this licensing model. We are running ESX v4 and they still want to change.

I'm assuming they're on a maintenance plan with VMWare and that after this switch you'll have access to VMWare ESX 5.0 should you so desire, right?

It sounds like it maybe cheaper in the long run right?
A 1gb server before casting 50? Now only 15..

They don't have a choice. This is affecting all VSPP members as of the 31st March. However what is also changing is the way VMware charges for the RAM.
They now charge for Reserved RAM rather than allocated. The reserve amount can be 50% of the allocated amount.
e.g. If you have a VPS which has 2GB Allocated RAM You can set the Reserve to 1GB (50% of allocated amount) and therefore pay for $15 rather than $30 for the RAM. This is basically oversubscribing.
Another plus point is anything over 24GB RAM is not charged per VM.█★Owner of Corgi Tech Limited

I'm still a fan of Citrix's licensing scheme of "per hypervisor."

I like that pricing or just priced per server. Some software I have looked at charges per core or per socket and when you are one of the rare AMD based members with over 30 cores, it's a lot more expensive than intel and just seems like a bad idea. Even per GB of memory isn't good for everyone depending on your business model and the main selling point that you profit off of.
I wouldn't mind onapp having a fixed price or vmware charging per machine.
So, I have a host using VMware and I'm a client with 8GB of memory, would this affect me much? I assume pricing is going to go up for me.

Problem is that the capacity (ram/sockets/cores/storage/etc) of the machines are growing quickly - Moore's Law etc - so if OnApp (and VMware) charged per physical server (hypervisor) we would, in principle, decline in revenue every year.
