server box for gameservers
hello,
I am totally new to this so i need some help,
I would like to buy a server box to host websites and serveral gameservers for half life 1 and 2.
on what do i have to pay extra attention for if i want to host 3 to 5 gameservers that are reliable, fast and have a good tickrate?
once i have the server box, how does it work? is it alot like a computer? Do i need 1 steam account per server that i want to host? (for counterstrike condition zero on steam)
Do i need a program to manage files/stuff on the server box?
I have so many questions that i dont even know where to start any help is appreciated,
thank you.
greets
ps: sorry if this is the wrong subforum

It sounds like you'll need a managed server (you pay for the server to be managed by someone other than yourself).
You dont need a steam account for hosting CS.
What is your budget and desired location/country/continent?

My budget for the serverbox is around the 1000$

So you'd like a server in any location where you can split it into smaller servers, or do you want 3-5 separate dedicated servers?

You want to host 3-5 servers total of Source servers?
If that is the case, that is easy....they don't use as much resources as you think, although Gmod uses lots of CPU and RAM.

I want 3 to 5 separate servers for counter-strike/condition-zero and maybe in the near future also for sourcegames.
all hosted from one computer or (serverbox) that I have installed here at home. (Don't have one yet)
my budget for the serverbox(physical box installed at my home) is $1000 max if it is a really good one.
- I want to host 3 to 5 diffrent servers with diffrent IP's and diffrent MOD's, so 3 to 5 individual dedicated servers.
hosted from my home from the serverbox
- Well I'd rather have to much ram and cpu then to less becous i'ts possible that I will use that server box for other games too so I defenitly need enough memory and stuff,
Do you have any good recommendations for a serverbox that is ideally for my purposes?
also how can I set it all up once I have purchased and recieved my server box?
how does a server box work exactly? does it have a operating system like windows vista/xp?
ps: I hope you guys understand what i am asking
thank you for you'r time

Hosting from your home location != a dedicated server . I'd also highly advice against it as the quality of the network is of major importance for gaming. What kind of upload speeds does your connection have?
Hosting can be done in so many ways, on Linux you could manage by just using a simple text editor like vi/nano, for Windows notepad, notepad++ etc.

please dont tell me you are going to try and host and sell servers from your home internet connection ?
multi ips will impossible going that routet , its best to colocate the server in a data center.

Don't host a server from your home, many here will advise against it. You can go with a small dedicated server near you, or your players and it will be much better in terms of network (latency), uptime, hardware etc.

robert
this is my speedtest result:
www .speedtest.net/result/1825920791.png
all
If these speeds are not recommended to host several servers then how would u suggest I host multiple servers with as low cost as possible? by leasing a server? ae: www .server-lease.com

Your best option is to pay a monthly rental fee and get good spec hardware and network etc. You wouldn't have to worry about it all then.

Where are your users likely to be, maybe you could look at some US, maybe some Europe servers?

yes i did that but i havent found cheap hosts for when i want to host 3 or more servers, none of them give discounts
so now i pay $89 for 3 months for 1 normal CS:CZ server with 26 slots at gameservers.com
if I would like to host 3 servers then it would be $89 for one month and $267 for 3 months and that is a bit to much

Why would you want that many servers? If you can't do $89 per month then I don't think you will get very far, honestly. Where are you from and where would you want the servers to be located.

its not that i cant do it, its just that I dont want to when there is the possibility to host gameservers myself on somekind of way
I'm from belgium and the server should be located somewhere in europe but it should be powerfull enough to hold many players without causing lag to players from the US or to other players from other parts of the world

Not really possible. With Source games such as CSS, latency is very critical and if you are hosting in Europe, the average pings are 140+ to the United States. Anything over 120 ms latency is too high for competitive source games. Although games like Minecraft, etc would be fine in Europe, but Source games would not for U.S players.
You have to make up your mind: Do you want U.S players or Europe and surrounding country players?

A nice location to get both a decent latency to Europe & the US + Canada would be New York (or areas surrounding New York). Both Europeans and North Americans remain in the sub-100ms area then. Side effect is that New York is really expensive.
HoneLive is probably the best cheap option there:

The "i5-2500 16"-setup, you can also email them and see what you can arrange. They are quite flexible.

managing it with fireftp

You'd have to install everything yourself. Though, for most games there are enough tutorials for beginners, I'd say.
