Managed Dedicated Question
Yesterday i purchased a managed dedicated server from Ubiquity Servers.
After a day i received my welcome mail and i noticed they hadn't give me root password, so i opened a ticket and asked for it.
After some replies they just told me they couldn't give me the root password because the server wouldn't be secure.
Now, im quoting from them:
- It is industry standard for managed servers to not have client root access.
- Companies who provide root access on managed servers cannot possibly maintain an effective security configuration.
It's the first time this happens to me so i was shocked. At first i wanted to cancel the server and just go away, but i decided to make it self managed and im going to outsource the server management..
So 2 questions:
1) Have it ever happened to you, is it actually normal?
2) Any recommendations on cPanel server management? ^^

It does make sense not to provide root access as there could be a conflict when it comes to managing the server. If you're looking for a managed server, you should leave the management to the provider as you can work within WHM control panel for any client level management required.

This this normal. If you pay for manage service then let them do everything. Just call them up with every little tiny thing you need done with your server.
This is what you pay the extra for.
It sounds like to me you want a simi managed server.

We also don't give root access to customers with a managed server. It's normal, because if you take a managed box then mostly you don't know much about managing it
If you do, why would you need to take a managed server?
Semi-managed would be a better solution for you then, might save you some costs also.» www.InstantDedicated.com - Online in no time

Semi-managed is always an option, but there are hosts out there that will fully manage your server and give you root access. Your best bet is to contact the company before hand and check. As far as the outsourced server management, google will pop up a few suggestions. You should be able to find reviews on companies you are considering. Good luck!

I just got schooled, I didn't know that there was an in-between either. I always understood it as managed or unmanaged (with add on options such as ping monitoring.) I also always thought it was fairly odd when people asked if we gave full root access with the server. Now I can see why. I don't see how outsourcing management would work in some instances where you need to login as root to install or chmod.

Some clients choose not to deal with root access and that's fine. This policy just doesn't seem right.

It is not actually normal but providers can do this if they want it that way. It is per their discretion.
But it is not bad to ask for the root password since you rent the server? You should ask them for this.

As far as it being the industry standard, I disagree totally!
However, in their case, they may have a TOS which says they are responsible for specific things that other managed hosts aren't. So they may have to do this. IE, most managed hosts take responsibility for your panel and O/S updates but if you go into your server and delete critical files with root access, that is not their problem (nor should it be) and they can only offer a RE-installation.
I would be their service and TOS is more detailed.WEBCS.com - WEBster Computing Services
