Unhappy with WiredTree downtime. Looking for A+ Quality Hosting Provider. $1000+

I'll start by saying that WiredTree has always been very accommodating to our specific needs - however, regular downtime (especially in recent months) and human errors have all added up to embarrassing situations for our management on more than one occasion.

We need to move on to an A+, solid hosting provider who can deliver unparalleled uptime & support.

    Needs:
    - 1 big server (Intel Dual Xeon E5645 or higher). 30 GB of RAM
    - Raid 10. Also the option of SSDs
    - Minimum of 10 TB of bandwidth per month
    - Budget : $1000 - $1400

    What we're looking for :
    - Uptime, Solid Infrastructure, Reliability and Service Quality are of utmost importance!
    - We are willing to pay a small premium for the absolute best support and service
    - Located in USA
    - cPanel support

On a parallel note, does Amazon Cloud-front (their new CDN) make sense as an alternative? What are the things we need to consider when moving from dedicated servers to a cloud service? Is it worth a look?

    Thank you!

A big server is nice, especially if properly equipped and backed up.

You might opt for two mid-sized servers and split your load across them. Rather than put all your eggs in one basket. Send off requests for custom quotes instead of using online configurators. You'll usually get better deals, and/or perks since it's not a small project.

    Hello franz13...

Just a quick question for you... You are using this one large server... What are you using the server for? Have you considered 2 servers that could be used to provide better uptime?

If you want maximum uptime you should verify the following:

    1) Provider has 2+ edge Internet rowers
    2) Provider has at least 2, and really 3+ Internet connections (so that even if one goes down there is still redundancy)
    3) Provider has your server connected to two diverse switches (a LAG with members on two switches of one large stock is NOT what you want). Switches get upgraded, at some point and if your connected to two switches this will eliminate network downtime.
    4) For your budget I would suggest that your server has a redundant power supply. Each power supply should be connected to a different transfer switch that is connected to at least N+1 UPS and a generator. Ideally you would want 2+ power feeds to the building
    5) Make sure that if your using Hardware RAID cards that it has a battery backup, or some other flash cache protection
    6) Make sure that if your using Hardware RAID cards that the drives are Enterprise drives and NOT Desktop (Western Digital Black is NOT enterprise)
    7) Make sure that you have RAID (Raid1, RAID10, etc) on your server (this will protect you against a hard drive failure), but also make sure you have off-server backups (This will help protect you from loss of data, accidental deletions, etc).
    8) Make sure that your server cannot remove your off-server backups (i.e. an NFS /iscsi mount point is not good) (for example you don't want to experience the day your server quits running and you need to restore from a backup. Worst case scenario if your server gets hacked and the hacker removes all of your important files.. You don't want them removing your /backup as well)
    9) You should consider a provider who can provide a VPN to connect to SSH / RDP / etc and provide firewall rules to drop all connections to your server other than what you need to operate (for example, if your ONLY running on port 80, ask your provider to ONLY allow port 80 to your server.

The list goes on, but this should give you a good starting point ;-)

    Hey Franz,

With that sort of budget, you can easily have 100% uptime on power and network. What sort of managed support do you require? I assume you want fully managed in that the support team will help you with any and everything you need, including security updates, monitoring, etc.

I am sure you mean a 100% uptime SLA and that is significantly different then 100% uptime on power and network.
The common SLA we encounter, list so much exceptions that you cannot speak of a true SLA. The common SLA also has very limiting penalties in case they do miss the 100% and in the case the listed exceptions do not cover the outage.

Truth is, most 100% uptime SLA's are pretty much worthless.

HiVelocity is unmanaged, but almost zero downtime (especially since moving into their new DC). If you want a beast, you can get a Dual E5 Romley Octo core, so 16 cores with hyperthreading, 32 gig or ram and Raid 10 SSD (120GB per) for $928.

The problem is that 1,2, and 3 cannot be independently verified. Pretty much every provider will claim to have this redundancy, whether or not it is true.
