    question: E3-1270 vs E5620 ?

I looking at the securedservers.com comparison page at http://www.securedservers.com/why-se...comparison.php
between a E2-1270 and a E5620, benchmark nearly the same, are these 2 server compatible?

    any ideas?

I use this chart to comapre cpu processing power:

The price on the two SS servers in question is pretty far apart.

If you need more than 16gb of ram, I'd go with their E5620 (comes with 48gb). Hosts are all charging a lot more for the 24gb or 32gb ram configurations on the E3 line.

If it were just down to processors (not cost), I'd take the dual E5620 configuration, for its 8 cores and 16 threads (useful for lots of worker tasks). However I can vouch for the E3-1270, it's a tremendous processor. I'm using the 1270 in a machine right now with MySQL 5.5 and Sphinx. I've previously used a dual 5620. I'm not seeing significant performance differences CPU wise when drilling the database (only when I'm running a lot of tasks simultaneously, then the 8 cores are nice). I was able to save quite a bit of money by moving to the 1270.

I've also used the X3440, and the 1270 is blowing its doors off.

The Dual Quad Core E5620 has 2 procs, 8 physical cores, supports more RAM, and more drives (4-bay vs 2-bay) than the E3. The E3-1270, also a very powerful cpu, has 1 proc, 4 phsical cores, supports up to 32 GB of RAM.

The question becomes what you will be using either of these for. I'm sure with that information present you'll get a lot of feedback as to which will be your best bet.

I think the 1270 should work nicely for you CPU wise, but depending on how much HD space you need, the 5620 may be a better choice.

Really good point! Hard drives space or speed is often the limiting factor for a server.

The other thing to consider, do you need the 48GB of ram or does 32 or under work for you. Sadly because the E5s not yet out, we are having to compare old gen with new gen.

The E3-1270 and Dual 5620 are nearly the same speed, as evidenced by the benchmarks. The amount of ram you need (dual 5620 supports more ram) as well as price, should drive the decision there. Personally, as a provider, I find it cheaper to offer E3 servers than equally configured Dual 5620 servers, so because the Dual 5620 is about the same performance while costing more to buy, as a provider I would prefer the E3, but as a customer it should depend on the price you're being charged.

I actually use both of these atm.

The E3-1270 is better for single threaded processes, by a large margin.
However the 5620 is also great if you don't need the insanity per core deal.

Dual Xeon E5620 is similar with E3-1270.

If you need large RAM, E5620 is your choice. If you need RAM less than 32GB, then use E3-1270.
