Looking for dedicated server around $25/Mon

New to dedicated server, what kind of spec can I expect? Hope to have more memory, not necessary high end CPU.

    Thanks

Hey xKey, I'm afraid your budget is very low.

Have you considered looking at a Virtual server? You'd find a nice package for $25 P/M with reasonable resources

You will never get Dedicated server in $25/month. You need to consider purchasing VPS.

It might be useful to mention where you are going to use it for. Maybe a VPS can already meet the requirements.

Most of you are right. The budget is low for a dedicated server. Have tried OpenVZ VPS, the performance is not great when running tomcat. Just to explore some options out there. http://www.kimsufi.ie/ seems to be tempting

You should bare in mind what the quality of supplementary services (such as support etc) will be like when spending as little as $25 / month. The term 'stack em high, sell em cheap' springs to mind.

Your budget is not going to get you a dedicated server. If you are looking for a good decent server you are going to have to increase that budget. What will you be doing with it maybe you can look at getting something else closer to your budget now.

I've used CoreNetworks before to run a cheap backup server. Never really had a problem with them. Maybe give them a look?
Would you just look at that...

Even if you did find a $25 server from a sketchy host, you're not going to get anything stable or reliable. Go for a VPS and upgrade as you grow.

Then how do you explain the hosts mentioned thus far that do offer dedicated servers for $25?

Do you have personal experience with all the hosts that fit the $25 per month budget?

Actually there is a silver lining here. If I was worried about doing something that is CPU intensive or DiskIO, one of these may be good. I will use Minecraft as an example. Many VPS Providers actually disallow Minecraft.

Now, I would not use one of these for Web Hosting. I know both of the providers above have been around for a while

They either use them as loss leaders, subsidise the server line of business with other more profitable operations, or have private equity to burn. You can't turn a profit on a dedicated server for $25/mo even if the server hardware is free.

None of what you wrote addresses what I was questioning, namely that it would be impossible to find hosts offering dedicated servers for $25. It clearly is possible.

This is absolutely correct. You can find pretty good hosts that offer extremely cheap dedicated servers. They will have their shortcomings, which you can either live with or pay more at another host. I have dedicated server I pay a little more than 10 EUR per month for. 100% uptime for over six months and surprisingly good network. The hardware is old but it does exactly what I need it do, with some room to spare. I have only needed support once; to reinstall OS, which they did on a Sunday evening.

$25 is going to be a very difficult price point to be at for a dedicated server. Even if you can find something without a setup fee, the quality could be questionable as others have mentioned.

I would definitely say to aim for a VPS at that price point. You're likely to find something of higher quality, I would imagine, as $25 is a more realistic price for a VPS. Just my opinion!

    Good day:

"Then how do you explain the hosts mentioned thus far that do offer dedicated servers for $25?"

Just because someone offers something for a price does not mean...

    * They are making a profit on it
    * That it has any quality
    * That the business will be able to continue to support the offering, existing clients included.... and support includes keeping the server up, etc.

    Thank you.

I'm surprised that someone might thing of getting a dedicated server for less than $60 - $70 per month. A decent 1U colocation starts at around $50/month. if someone sells dedicated server for cheaper, those are probably unreliable desktops or a virtual instances created through full virtualization. Well there might be other options. For example pretty old desktops/servers to be still on stock.

They peer with about everyone, one of the largest DC's in Europe and um, most of the servers are out of date.
