    Minecraft

i have a customer on OpenVZ who has a minecraft server

they said there server gets really laggy

i heard from some people that openVZ works good if you increase something in java or limit something

    how can i resolve this

i tried adding more cores and ram already

Is he allocating burst RAM to the server? That could cause an issue because if there isn't enough available it could go to swap.

Then I'm guessing it has to do with HDD lag in read/write speed or CPU lag. What are the specs of the box?

I have hosted Minecraft servers on OpenVZ before and it did not work out so well. Didn't seem to matter how much RAM was being used or whether or not it was burst - the Java JVM just does not seem to perform well in such an environment. I've done some searching around and found other similar stories.
I would not host Minecraft on OpenVZ if at all possible.

Only one hard drive? How many VPS's are on this node? What does your hard drive I/O look like?

We have several Minecraft servers hosted on OpenVZ and do not have a problem with any of them.
