    Ddos Attack

How much time a company like Hostgator will take to resolve the Ddos attack on the dedicated server ??

I am having a Vbulletin forum which is under Ddos attack as per the Hostgator is saying, but they are not telling me about Attack size, type, connections and packets per second ?

Can someone plz tell me how to know all the things after the Ddos attack.

Waiting for help as my site is down for more then 2 days.

Is their any way to check either this is a Ddos attack or the Hosting company is making fool of me, its being more then 2 days server is down and nearly 10 hours no response of the ticket.

I am running a vbulletin forum, and continuously getting database errors.

    Waiting for reply.

You have to trust what they're telling you. There is no way to independently verify.

Hostgator servers are managed however in case of things like (D)dos attacks some special things may apply as to what they will do for you.I don't think Hostgator would lie about things like this.Any reason why you are getting hit with a (D)dos ?

Most providers simply nullroute the IP if there's an ongoing DDOS, did they do the same with you or didn't they take any action at all?

    Hello,

What is your ticket number on this issue, I'd be happy to look into this for you. Two days seems very excessive!

Is that really necessary though? Isn't it sufficient to just say you were not happy there and move on? I find it rather excessive to huge flame wars on forums over relatively minor disagreements.

    Hi bnimbhal,

There's a good chance that if you're getting ddosed and or whatever the issue is you're going to continue to have it wherever you go. Before leaving I'd recommend you send me the ticket number so that I can have my brightest admin out of over 1,000 employees review this.

You can then take his discovery and post it all over the world and continue to switch hosting companies. If you let me help you will know what has been going on and have the answers you deserve. If were at fault I'm also going to be issuing you a large refund versus you just leaving on your own and getting nothing.

Please send me your ticket number so I can figure out what's going on for you. Brent @hostgator.com

These kind of responses show your lack of professionalism and prevent providers from wanting to work with you.

Maybe, but 2 days is pretty intense for a server downtime with such a provider...

I suggest going to softlayer they know what to do. Plus they have hardware level firewalls and a quicker support response time compared to host gator. They also have cisco guard which should assist in blocking the attacks and monitoring for any new ones.

That depends entirely on the kind of attack. Ultimately if the person attacking you is smart, chances are either you or your host has to outsmart them. Hardware isn't the be-all-and-end-all of DDoS attacks, it just adds to the tools a sysadmin could use to prevent the attacks.

Some attacks are so large it wouldn't be worth the host's time to keep you on. For example, if you were hit by a 20gig attack and took a whole/half rack offline, I don't think they would be too happy to keep you around.

    Hello,

The server you’re on is currently hosted on Softlayer’s network and does have their Cisco Guard enabled. The Cisco guard seems to be doing very little to nothing to block the syn attacks you’ve been getting hit with.

I see that we’ve been able to block the attack numerous times now, but unfortunately within a few hours of us logging out of your server they start back up with new ips.

It’s possible there’s more that could have been done with firewall rules, but since you recently firewalled hostgator out from accessing your server I have no way to confirm or deny this at this time.

Hostgator, This attack type is called SSYN or Spoofed SYN

it generates random ips to flood the target

You should take them up on their offer and hold out a bit. DDoS attacks truly do follow you wherever you go. If you move, make sure they're not sniffing packets as well because that could compromise the security of your future server.

Atomic we have over 800 employees some that are pretty clueless, some that are brilliant, and a few that are the best in the world at what they do. We know what all the attacks are and how to combat them, but thank you for the information.

I myself am more of a businessman and probably one of the most technically challenged at the company. There's a reason why I forward anything above my head over to one of our lvl3's.

New hires have to start somewhere....

If they don't pick things up quickly they usually don't end up sticking around very long.

Ddos attack cannot be prevented 100%. You need to contact NOC to check this issue on router level also.

Thumbs down What a shameful reply

I raised a Ticket on Thursday, 16 February 2012 1:19 PM about the data base error.

After 3 days when not get any response from a very big hosting company "Hostgator" I hired some guys to check whats the problem going on.

So I send a mail to to Hostgator to cease the work for sometime, then they replied me.

    Hello,

I have ceased work, they walled the server that they are installing nginx at this time, which will likely help with load.

    Best regards,
    Andrew W.

which will likely help with load. What a shameful reply

    are you real?

you've upset someone they've launched a massive DDOS on your site. Hostgator has taken it down so as not to adversely affect other poeple in the same rack. They aren't a DDOS mitigation provider and have helped you (probably more than they should have)

now you want to take legal action?

    i'd think again

I was having a dedicated server, as I know Hostgator is a big company.
If a small company can solve the problem within 4-5 hours, now what you say about the service of the Hostgator.

And I suggest you to plz read the previous posts.

lol, sure... Hire a lawyer that will take your $400/hr and may tell you what you want to hear until you are no longer able to pay them. I don't think you could get a dime from HG and in my humble opinion, your a pain in the ass because HG is under no obligation to provide you ddos mitigation and can discontinue services to you for any reason at any time.

    Million Thanks to Woo Servers.

I appreciate their services, thousand-thousand times better then Hostgator.

Hostgator are just making fool of their customer, their technical team is full of idiots.

I moved my two servers to Woo Servers, and their response time is not more then 2-3 min. And their server are very much cheap as compare to Hostgator.

Hostgator has decent services but they're not the top dog when it comes to DDoS mitigation . However , the OP makes me think that DCs/server providers should keep a list of people that we collectively ban from hosting . I mean seriously what decent webmaster talks like that ? If anything the guys deserves to be DDoSed .

Not the whole thread (D)dos attacks are a serious concern only the post i quoted there is nothing wrong with mentioning who your hoster is (if your a customer and not an employee) but 1 time is more then enough. That's why the quote button exists btw to respond to a particular post
