You first should design a proper business plan.

Properly plan your operation costs against the amount cost from VPS.

    Back On-Topic
    I'd recommend
    48GB of DDR3 Ram.
    2x 12/16 AMD Opteron
4x SATA with Raid Card with at least 256MB Cache or hybrid raid

You should be able to push 12-16 Clients (You could with 2GB Ram, 2GB Burst, Dedicated Core or Access to 4Cores - On You. You may run into IO issues still with this many clients through.

Lets say it costs $100 to colo the server, Charge $19.95 per VPS, you'd prob profit $95 per server (Not including emergency fund or others such).

colo will be less then $75/month
each will have access to 1 shared core each
the node disk i/o will be from 300megabytes per second to 500 per second
    it will be openvz

Depends on the specific processor(s) you're looking at and the performance level you plan on guaranteeing to customers. Depending on the RAID setup and HDD used, you might benefit from using a couple of lower spec servers with fewer users on each.

That's why the complete specification is important. What CPUs are you considering? Also, How many users will you need to allow for profit, collocation, maintenance, hardware replacement costs, etc.?

In some cases it can actually be beneficial to use higher-end desktop CPUs ($300 - $400) and run a greater number of less congested nodes than build a killer node with a $1500 to $2500 processor and a high number of users.

That leaves you with about 7Ghz total processing power. 10 users would be an average of 700mhz each, 15 would drop that number to about 466mhz. It would be hard to push much further than 15, but depending on HDD IO 15 should be doable for a budget platform. With that said many low-end providers might run 30 or 40 users on this setup, in the end it still comes down to what kind of service you want to provide and the profit margin you feel comfortable with.

Our oldest nodes from years ago have four cores, most of our nodes howeever from the past couple years have 8 or 12 cores.

I actually didn't even realize that Intel was selling a 4 core i3, generally these are limited to 2 physical cores with HT. If the server does in fact have 4 physical cores that should help you to provide a more stable environment.

Do NOT try to fit to many people onto a node, i try to keep it at 5/15 VPS's. You have to remember that it's not just RAM and bandwidth that you are sharing, CPU and port speed also matter.

If you are starting something small, kimsufi will do fine.

    A bit off topic,

This kid [mtwiscool] ran around begging for VPS's and then used them for mass ddosing.

mtwiscool isn't asking anyone in this thread for sponsorship, so I'm not sure how this is valid.

In some ways that thread is more of lynch mob with almost no verifiable evidence on any side. If he gets a server and has it terminated for terms of service violations, that's on him and doesn't have a thing to do with us.

I understand where you're coming from Bitcable, but there is just something about the way the users in that forum quickly become judge, jury, and executioners that rubs me the wrong way.

It seems ok. Just make sure you get 4 disks to build a raid10.
