Getting read-only file system errors
Hello,
Is it normal on a VPS to have a read-only file system error once in a while? I have noticed that the VPS gets this at least 1 to 3 times every month for 2 months now. That is a total of about 5 to 6 since the VPS was started late December.
Note that the VPS is not even close to getting a load. It's basically a dev server thus traffic is close to a flat line.
It is powered by OnApp.
Thanks.

The SAN probably disconnected.

It's not normal, have you told your provider about this?

It should never happen.
Depending on what kernel/distro your using, your OS may be able to support them cutting over from one SAN to the hopeful fallback SAN. Some older kernels don't like this though and will go into RO mode very quickly.
When it goes into RO, do you simply reboot and its better? or does it usually come with a long downtime from the DC/host?BuyVM - OpenVZ & KVM Based VPS Servers - Chat with us

Several times.
They keep saying they'll fix it, and yes, Francisco is spot on in his answer regarding SAN issues. That's what they have been telling me often. At first the support agent said it could be a misconfigured server. Later on they changed it to a faulty SAN.
It's running CentOS 6 from a bare CentOS 6 image they had. I had to pull Apache/MySQL/PHP/etc via YUM one by one.

Hello Francisco,
It's running CentOS 6 from a bare CentOS 6 image they had. I had to pull Apache/MySQL/PHP/etc via YUM one by one.
VPS will fail to boot on kernel 2.6.32-220.4.1.el6.x86_64 so it had to be reverted to 2.6.32-71.el6.x86_64.
When it's in RO mode I have no choice but to go to Recovery, fsck the system, the do a reboot. Otherwise, the services on the server go nuts because it's on RO mode.
Thanks!

Okay. I'll probably have the nodes transfered to another DC. A more stable one. The one it is on now is in a fairly new DC in the US so the tech support says. If this continues to be a problem, which you hinted with VPS.net/OnApp systems, I might have to go for another host.
Frankly I'm a bit disappointed about their support too. Twice their Live Chat did not respond for about 20+ minutes waiting, I had to leave. I can understand they could be busy but whatever. Another time the Live Chat agent suddenly left and did not come back after several minutes without even excusing himself.
Would OpenVZ be a good idea or Xen? By the way what virtualization technology is OnApp based on?

Could you PM me your ticket number and I will have a look for you. We are currently starting a massive SAN and location rollout. We are retrofitting around 50% of our clouds with a new SAN solution. WE will also be replicating the setup we have in our Amsterdam cloud (which has had virtually zero issues in the last 6 months) into our 7 new locations that are going live in the next few weeks

Hi Rus,
Thanks for responding.
The real issue is not now but later. We are still on dev stage. What I'm worried about is that once we start on live/production in 2 months or so, the same things will happen, abot SAN disconnecting and leaving the server in RO mode.
We have dedi server for another client, I've never encountered it going on RO mode, but then again I know VPS is a different technology. This one client has a lower budget so VPS is the answer until it gets raised.
Will Chicago DC be among those retrofitted soon?
