    Recommend Me a Budget VPS

    Hello,

I am currently using Burst.NET as my VPS provider, but their reliability isn't what I would like and I would like to move to a more reliable host.

I run several web sites, including a site for a client that has seen 1K hits per day (rarely).

    My wishlist:
    High reliability
    Fast bandwidth
    ~1GB of RAM
    ~50GB of disk space
    No Control Panel is needed.
I would like the provider to provide nameservers, but this isn't a requirement. (BurstNET doesn't)

My budget is around $20/month, although it's flexible and is expected to expand shortly so I would like the ability to upgrade my VPS without a reinstall or all that stuff.

Edit: The VPS needs to be in the US, preferably East Coast

$20 is a reasonable budget for what you're requesting. I'd recommend checking the offers section of the forum and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for!

There's plenty of great providers close to that price range.
For about $25, look at MrNerd or VMPort.

    Examples: 3091507, 3111069, 3111255.

I've not always opened a ticket because I've not always been near a computer when the site goes down. I get a notice from Mon.itor.us whenever a site I own goes down, it checks every 30 minutes.

Typically what happens is the site goes down, I open a ticket, it gets fixed really quickly and then it goes back down. If I respond saying the server is offline again, I rarely get a response, or a fast one. Often the server is down for hours at a time.

I was trying to add an additional site to my server yesterday and the site kept going down that I eventually gave up. I'm talking about more than a brief, server is not responding for 60 seconds kind of thing, server is down for 30 minutes, then works for about 10 and then goes back down.

I'm not faulting burst net for what I pay, I pay very little and get far more resources than I expected, but I need to have reliable uptime.

That node is not down, nor is your VPS, nor is our Miami POP.

Looks like you have a firewall blocking stuff....which may be the root of your issues.

I cleaned up the node, and it is quite a bit faster right now, but it was performing reasonably fine prior to that anyways.

Ah, it might be my firewall. I'm using fail2ban to ban users who bruteforce SSH.

During my downtimes, it appears as if 117.34.88.152 got banned. Is this a burstNET server?

Otherwise, I don't see anything in my iptables that could be causing an issue:

    PHP Code:

    Chain INPUT
    (policy ACCEPT)
    target     prot opt source               destination
    fail2ban
-ssh  tcp  --  anywhere             anywhere            multiport dports ssh
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:ssh
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:smtp
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:www
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:pop3
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:imap2
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:ssmtp
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:585
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:imaps
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:pop3s
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:domain
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:ftp
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:3128
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:webmin
    ACCEPT     tcp
    --  anywhere             anywhere            tcp dpt:953
    ACCEPT     all
    --  anywhere             anywhere            ctstate RELATED,ESTABLISHED
    DROP       all
    --  anywhere             anywhere

    Chain FORWARD
    (policy ACCEPT)
    target     prot opt source               destination

    Chain OUTPUT
    (policy ACCEPT)
    target     prot opt source               destination

    Chain fail2ban
    -ssh (1 references)
    target     prot opt source               destination
    RETURN     all  --  anywhere             anywhere

I have opened ticket #: 3112553 in regards to the downtime I experienced earlier.

I updated it to include additional data about my iptables configuration and ip addresses fail2ban has blocked.

Not unless BurstNET have secretly opened up a new pop in China

I doubt it's my firewall. My VPS is currently in the state where it's not accepting any connections for outside BurstNET. I've flushed the rules to iptables so even fail2ban can't interfere.

    PHP Code:
    Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
    target prot opt source destination

    Chain FORWARD
    (policy ACCEPT)
    target prot opt source destination

    Chain OUTPUT
    (policy ACCEPT)
    target prot opt source destination

It seems this topic has derailed a bit. My recommendation is to leave the "budget" world behind and go with Linode. Trust me you will not look back. They respond to tickets in a matter of minutes and are always knowledgable and friendly. Search these forums and you will pretty much find nothing other then praise!

    malfist,

Which provider did you end up going with, I have the same recurring issues with one of Burstnet's Miami VPS. I run it as my private proxy server and it's painful how often I have network issues.

    Thanks

I read good things about hostigation, so I'm trying them out this month. If I like them, I may stay. They had a really awesome deal that I couldn't pass up. If they disappoint me, I'll try Mr Nerd next, and then if I still have problems (I hope not!), I'll fork over the extra cash for linode. I was previously on linode, but for the price I paid, I didn't have enough resources so I left, however, I never had any downtime with them and if they were cheaper I would have stayed.

It is easy, I was just too lazy to figure it out. But I moved to a new provider, and they didn't provide DNS so now I get too!

    It was actually pretty easy
