Some dumb questions about VPS hosting.
I currently have a website that has outgrown shared hosting. I am going to get a VPS from myhosting.com, but I am a newbie to VPS hosting. I don't want to pay the extra $10 for CPanel, so I am going to install Kloxo. How can I run the Linux commands required to install it, and how can I access the files before i install it? Also can I update my name servers to the VPS, or is there something more complicated I have to do to point my domain to my VPS?
Thanks

You say you may have outgrown shared hosting but that may not be the case, maybe the issue is more that your site has outgrown your current shared hosting/host.
Unless you are capable of managing a VPS from the command line it wouldn't be beneficial to make this move as a control panel system, whether cPanel or Kloxo has it's limits when it comes to optimization for your specific site. One of the worst things going on with the hosting industry is some people pushing webmasters towards getting a VPS and it's really not the way forward unless you're either going to get a managed service, pay for optimization or unless you're able to manage the VPS fully yourself. cPanel and Kloxo don't replace the command line at root level, they just speed up processes by stacking options together and making things easier to find. Just setting up cPanel or Kloxo alone won't leave you with an out-the-box optimized package but a very bare foundation with more work needed.

Pay the $10 for cpanel and pay for management. I don't think you are ready for a unmanaged solution.

First off you may only have out grown your current provider like said and they just want you to upgrade.
If you don't know how to optimize and get a server going then search on google for info about that and tutorials. Also same for installing anything on a VPS 100% if you search on google what you want to do a tutorial will show you step by step when you find one.
Also you may not need to go and upgrade there are other providers that can provide a shared account that may be able to support your site. For example mdd-hosting I believe that's it offers shared accounts with extra CPU access or something like that give them a email.

I'd suggest you to pay the extra $10 for the cPanel and also for a total managed services. Having a cPanel is much easier.

pay extra $10 does not mean 'management free' or no need take care at all.

You can find several tutorials for the installation of Kloxo on Google, and is a good control panel for VPS but never could ever compare with Cpanel, if you have no Linux experience highly recommend using Cpanel, for example if you need upgrade to the latest version of PHP or Apache you could do this with Cpanel in a much easier, with kloxo will have to do from the command line. just my 2 cents

At most hosts, you have to have your authoritative name servers installed on your VPS (authoritative name servers are the "ns1.your-domain.com" and "ns2.your-domain.com" name servers that have your A records, MX records for email, etc.)
To do this, you first have to create the "child name servers" or "private name servers" at your domain name registrar. Somewhere, often hidden, they will have a link to let you do this ... or at least most of them will. You put in what you want to name them ... most people go with the standard "ns1." and "ns2." names. Then you put in the IP address where they are located.
Then you have to install the name servers on your VPS. And after you have done all that, you have done it wrong, because both name servers are on one server, and fail whenever the server fails, leading to lost email, possible reduction in "link juice" with search engines, etc.
So, the easier way ...
My friend Xtremo keeps telling me that FutureHosting.com's VPS are great, and I notice they provide management and "redundant authoritative DNS servers". So they, at least, take care of the name servers. On a cPanel VPS, you simply create the accounts in the "Web Host Manager" (WHM) application and it takes care of all the details.
You can also use an outside service like DNS Made Easy; the free DNS services are less reliable and prone to attracting the type of people that cause law enforcement to seize them, so go with a paid solution.
My opinion also includes this: either go with a fully managed VPS with cPanel, or stay with shared. The cost of a fully managed VPS with 512MB+ of RAM is going to be $35 plus. If you can't afford that, stay with shared, and avoid the temptation to go with a budget VPS host. You will regret going cheap.

I would suggest using a host known for its quality of support. If you're using one of those "big name brand" hosts that spends all their money on ads, then you may just need to find a better host -- one that spends its money on servers, its techs, and making your site work.
That's the general feel of most people in this thread.
And if you do get a VPS, go managed with cPanel. (And again -- look for a good host that's known for the quality of their hosting, not because they spend lots of money on ads and affiliate payouts that get them placed on those bogus top 10 lists.)|| Need a good host?

Depending on how much your willing to learn.
But if your current hosting plan is on Cpanel and you want to move to kloxo on a vps self-managed don't forget its not plug and play.
creating the domains and moving www content is easy.
Its all the other stuff that gets complicated, mailboxes, usernames, webmail, and so on..
To save yourself a few hours of madness take the cpanel license @ 10$ per month (which is fairly cheap as it retails for more) ..
And just import your backup file and update the dns.
And be done with it under 4 hours. (depending on the size.)
But if you want to install kloxo
you can check the install guide here : http://wiki.lxcenter.org/Kloxo+Installation+Guide

I'm a bit more wary of Kloxo right now.
It can randomly stop working: http://forum.lxcenter.org/index.php?...17971&start=0&
Having experienced that, it seems it's an issue that's been around for a while. After BuyVM moved the VPS to a new node (which is reasonable), Kloxo up and died. There's no known or obvious fix, aside from wiping the VPS and starting over. Because it's a non-important dev VPS, I'm trying to see if a fix exists, rather just just giving up.
It's really hard to beat cPanel, or even Plesk, in terms of being reliable for business needs.|| Need a good host?

The work was just maintenance to rebase things. Whatever the HN is running shouldn't change any of that It's possible you're hitting your beancounters so check /proc/beancounters
We had some cases where new beancounters for our .32 kernel nodes didn't apply properly so for sure check that
