Improve DNS + Mysql Performance?
Hey guys, I purchased a linux VPS last night just to play around with and practice some server stuff as I am mainly a Windows Server guy.
Anyway, it has 256MB Ram + Ubuntu 11.04 (no UI) and I have installed Apache, Mysql, and PHP sperately. Anyway, when nothing is runnig the server is already @ 25% ram usage because named (user = bind, DNS package) is using 50MB...Is this normal? I am not even running a DNS server off of it so can I uninstall or how can I minimize its impact?
Apache and PHP only add a little on top of that so their not an issue, but Mysql is Even with some "low memory" settings, it is taking up 130MB ram when idle. Below are my current settings, any suggestions on how to optimize them?
Code:[mysqld] skip-locking key_buffer_size = 16K max_allowed_packet = 1M table_open_cache = 4 sort_buffer_size = 64K read_buffer_size = 256K read_rnd_buffer_size = 256K net_buffer_length = 2K thread_stack = 128K [myisamchk] key_buffer_size = 12M sort_buffer_size = 12M

You don't need BIND as long as the VPS is not set to use itself as it's dns resolvers. (and it's most likley not, and if it is that can be changed)
If stopping BIND does not effect anything, you can safely remove it. (apt-get purge bind or apt-get purge bind9)

Also, add this to /etc/mysql/my.cnf under [mysqld] to disable innodb, which is a ram hog by default.
Code:default-storage-engine = myisam ignore-builtin-innodb

Well, Mysql probably does not need the default connection limit, tune it down somewhat.
Add the following to your my.cnf then re-start.
Code:[mysqld] set-variable = max_connections=20

Linux 256MB VPS
Thought I would update this. After 3 OS reinstalls I finally have it setup the way I like it....Apache, PHP, and a FTP server are using 20-25mbs when I am not logged into the server which is crazy low I think I know ngix or lightppd would have been better as Apache isn't very efficient but its what I am used to...
It is possible to run several services off a 128mb linux VPS, some semi-popular websites like 96mb.com and lowendbox.com run off similar VPS's...
Anyway, I did give up on Mysql however....No matter how I configured it, it would still take 100-150mb of ram even when idle I realized I don't have any plans to run any DB's off this box anyway so I don't need it.

FYI: not long after posting the link to my site on here did someone try to attack my apache (w00tw00t.at.blackhats.romanian.anti-sec) and tried accessing phpmyadmin. Too bad for them most of my modules are disabled and I have no need for phpmyadmin.
Someone from Salt Lake City, Utah (67.108.237.33) to be exact:
