4G speed enough for Hosting
Hi,
this is probably one of those not so bright question. I want to host my website someday out of my RV and deep in the woods!! Just using a 4G connection from one of the provider, is this a just a pipe dream or is it possible ?

You really don't want to. You'll get a lot more downtime than if you go with a professional host for something like $10/mo.

Hello jimmyjones
Technically this is possible. Even without a static IP address from your 4G provider.
I assume you mean LTE or WiMax services? And not HSPA+?
You could technicaly setup WAMP ( http://www.wampserver.com/en/) or AMMPS ( http://www.ampps.com/), or similar. And manage it from your computer.
The computer serving the content, would need to be available/online, as would your connection.
The primary problem, is, does your 4G provider allow this? Many have a policy against that. You would want to review the fine print.

First - you probably won't get 4G coverage deep in the woods.
Second - the common thing between all these wireless technologies is that they have high download rate and usually much lower upload rate.
And you usually don't get a real IP at all.
And the provider usually forbids this in their ToS.
And when you go over certain amount of bandwidth, they will probably throttle you.
And in short - don't do it

I am going to do this now. I will set up a basic site and run it off att's 4G. Will do it when I get some spare time soon.
Yes it can be done. The site uptime and speed will be terrible. It will feel like the late 1990's. You will have to run a highly optimized website also.

Yes, perfectly possible.
No, not recommended.
Speed would be a major bottleneck. Unless your site has minimal traffic it's not a good idea.

If there's not a special reason. I would suggest go with a quality web hosting plan instead handling everything by yourself.

It's best to go with whats suitable and not with something that's not needed. Fair enough you like the sound of it but always keep this on mind. Do you need more, or less than what you already got.

Hosting a website on a wireless connection is a recipe for downtime. You should look into hosting your site at a reliable host and use your wireless connection to connect to the Internet so you can remotely update your site.

You can get hosting for a basic website for 1 dollar per month or even 10 dollars per year.
You're going to spend a ton of money trying to run a generator "deep in the woods" to power your server.
Something tells me that you need special help and not just with websites. You know what I mean..

If I may ask, what exactly do you qualify as a "real" or "fake" IP? With most cellular devices your IP is changing pretty consistently (as often as every 30 seconds or so) but that wouldn't make those IPs "fake", but only transient or dynamic on a very short timescale.
Without a "real" IP - there would be no way for data to come back to your device.

Yes. There are also many hops through private networks before those packets get to the internet.
What is being asked here is unrealistic.

Maybe he's referring to providers who use NAT, which would of course prevent hosting any services on the phone.

Possible, but the device would still ultimately have a public IP even if it's shared with others.
