    BuyVM review (1+ year)

On 31 January 2011 i signed up for a $15/year VPS with BuyVM. Expecting nothing at all. Recently i renewed it for another year because i'm fully satisfied with the VPS.

The VPS is being used for audiologging/stream archiving. The 15GB space is enough to save about 10 days of audio, which is perfect for my needs. I run CentOS 5.

Support: In 2011 i opened some support tickets

    - 05/07/2011: VPS was down, this was due to a power failure in the datacenter. Answered in 6hrs.
    - 11/02/2011: VPS was down, this was due to moving me to another node. Answered and fixed in 10 minutes.
    - 01/05/2012: Requested a change on my account on file, i was changing e-mail addresses: Answered in 5 minutes.

Tickets are answered fast. The staff operates under some strange nicknames like 'bzimage' and they seem to name everything with the word 'pony'. Bit strange, but they sure are friendly.

Performance: My VPS runs smooth. The IO speed is better than the IO on my single SATA drive dedicated server

Network: In mid 2011 the network they use had 2 power cuts which caused some downtime. Besides that the network is fine. I'm from Europe (NL) and can easy get 500kb/sec download from my VPS. Considering their datacenter is almost in Canada, this is fine.

Features: The VPS control panel offers anything that needs to be done. They have quite a bit pre-made templates which let you install tailor made appliances. I use CentOS and install everything myself. The only con is here that my VPS won't boot when i install CentOS minimal. So i had to take the default template and YUM REMOVE a load of unneeded crap

So. Considering this all i'd give them 8.5/10. They go far above my expectations for $15/year

I'm glad we're at least away from HE and their power outages. After we moved I had a running counter on our twitter of how many power outages we dodged since the move. They've not had any new ones since their string of them in August/September.

Pony is part of their company culture - jump on the IRC chat and you could ask around, it's a bit of fun.

I can't recommend BuyVM highly enough. Franciso is also a top bloke.

Good review. BuyVM is one of the few good budget providers out there.

The only times I've had problems with BuyVM, it was a simple keyboard-chair interface error.
Toying with a 128MB VPS has been fun and educational.

Thanks... but something doesn't add up here.

It seems like BuyVM is coloing with EGIHosting, and EGIHosting doesn't use that data center (at least from what I can see on their DC list). Did they just not update their list with this DC?

    Not quite.

    We're in Coresite San, Jose

We pulled over last year at the end of July, dodging another 2 - 3 HE power outages by about 1 1/2 weeks.

We did well, we got the whole thing done in like 2 - 3 hours. Most people had bets in the half day range, but we did as much prep as we could before hand.

Well there you go, I linked to the wrong DC. Doh.

So it's this one then: http://www.coresite.com/San-Jose-Data-Center.php

EGIHosting do operate in this DC though. Sorry if I got you guys confused!
