Replacing SAS Hot plug drives with SSD (Dell)?
I am currently planning on buying a few used R410 servers.
They have several 3.5" SAS hot plug drives at the moment and I am looking to fit a 2.5" SSD drive.
Is it possible to buy a 3.5" fitting module for the SSD drive and replace one of the SAS drives (i e using that drive caddy)?
I am not sure if the backplane fits a SSD (SATAIII) and if I can re-use the drive caddy from the SAS hot plug currently in the machine?
Thanks in advance!

As the 2.5 ssd drive will be the same size as a normal 2.5 drive, you could just use a normal 2.5'' to 3.5'' mounting kit. You can get these for a couple of quid off ebay. What RAID card is in the r410's? If is PERC 6i or later (H700) it supports SSD.

most 2.5" to 3.5" converters/brackets have center-mount design which won't be compatible with 3.5" hot-swap bay in terms of the position of SATA data/power connectors after the conversion.
you will need Icy Dock MB882SP-1S-2B which is compatible with any 3.5" hot-swap sled:

Dell has converter trays like Supermicro I believe. Those Icy Dock things do not fit a lot of the hot swap trays.

the exterior dimensions, mounting screw hole positions as well as the position of SATA power/data connectors on the Icy Dock converter are all identical to a standard 3.5" SATA drive! any 3.5" hot-swap sled that takes standard 3.5" SATA drive will take this Icy Dock product. at lease, it works with all supermicro 3.5" hot-swap sleds from all kinds of chassis we've dealt with thus far.
the only thing Icy Dock can't do is to convert 2.5" SAS drives to 3.5" hot-swap format because it doesn't supply 12v power. so, it's good for 2.5" SATA/SSD drives only which need just 5v power feed.

You'll need Dell part number Y004G or N6RRK. That will let you use 2.5" drives in a 3.5" hotswap bay. I've used them in PE1950's and R410's without issue.
I'd recommend Intel SSD's as they work a little nicer than others with the Dell RAID controllers. Certain combinations of Sandforce drives and Dell RAID controllers are bad juju.

They only system we used Icy Dock for is Supermicro 811 chassis. It has a bit different hot swap tray. For all other systems it's both easier and cheaper to go with a supermicro converter.
Just check how much is the dell converter. If it's anywhere below ICY Dock - get it and it will work just fine, since I assume Dell knows that sata power and date connectors should not be in the middle of the tray while the backplane has it on the right side.
