Quick poll: interest level for Servers in China, HK, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Japan
Hi, all,
I have a network of partners to setup dedi servers in data centers in above locations.
I'm wondering if there is enough demands for that, before I develop the services.
Thanks for the insights in advance

Well, there is a lot of demand of servers in China as we serve this market, however due to the requirements in China we have to turn down most of the inquiries. From a foreign user perspective, a server in China can only be used for non-web applications such as monitoring, backups etc. Hosting a website is not an option.
Hong Kong and Singapore have traditionally been among the top Asian hubs for hosting/colocation so I guess the demand should be there.

Lots of foreign companies hosted their sites in China. So I'm surprised to hear that hosting is only for non-web application. Is there any way to work around that?

There is a strong interest - I've had an interest in the Asia market; but due to traffic prices it simply isn't a viable option for most people yet.
Once the infrastructure in Asia improves significantly, costs of traffic will go down and then Asia will be a great market.

Yes. The bandwidth costs a lot more in AP. Most servers share 100M switch ports, to minimize the cost.
However, with the growing local markets, overseas companies increasingly have to find a way to reach Asian customers with their web presence locally. Hence my interest to explore this business. I do have some potentially lesser expensive bandwidth options for markets such as China.
Let me know if anyone is interested in exploring this idea jointly.

-1 for Korea. The laws are so ridiculous right now. Though, they're currently discussing drawing back some of their totalitarian laws. If I have people in Korea to serve, I get a server in Japan instead.

Hi, Kiteplans, what kind of server do you need? do you have regular needs on that?

I'm sure there's a lot of interest in Asian servers, but when that interest meets up with the high prices for bandwidth, generally poor interconnections between Asian countries, and often unfriendly legal situations for hosting, there's a lot of desire for servers but understandably much less actual activity. If these problems could be resolved, then there would definitely be an explosion of hosting in the region, but that's really outside of the control of a hosting provider. Even with these problems it's going to be a growing market, but the question of whether you can take advantage of that growth or not is an open question.

We have servers in all these countries except for Korea and the most popular countries will have to be Singapore and Hong Kong, Singapore for its good connectivity in the Asian hub and Hong Kong for its close proximity to China.

Do you have the needed licenses to operate in this countries?
You need Telco licenses to operate in China/Taiwan/Singapore (partly)/Korea.
Here are some Informations for you:
China: Needs licensing for the datacenter, the ISP, the customer and any Websiteb hosted on it - Special licenses needed for streaming, social media, user generated content (forums/blogs with comment sections etc.), online shops.... you need a license for basically anything and the central government still has a kill switch for any IP and does not need to ask you to shutdown anything.
Don't be fooled by the saying that China is an open market - in the worst case if one of your customers posts anti communist or pro taiwan/pro tibet propaganda China CAN and _WILL_ HANG OR SHOOT you or the one responsible that this content was beeing hosted regardless if it was you or a customer.
Very, VERY cheap power (20A usable 220V for under 200$), state subsidized. (Depends on region/city). Power not very reliable, but UPS are available in large quantities and cheaply (even datacenter grade.), Generators need special licenses which anyone can violate as he likes since no one cares about it (again, depends on city - in Chengdu/Shenzhen you can do whatever you want - Beijing as beeing a dirtect governed city needs the right licenses or you get problems).
Payment a problem also, RMB is rectricted, you likely need to go to China and opena a bank account with convertible USD/RMB sub-accounts - not a problem when you have a Chinese company which you need anyway for the licenses.
Communication Chinese only, Staff may speaks english but does not WANT to do it.
HK: Good choice, changing economy and cheaper BW than ever currently, licensing not a problem.
Power surprisingly cheap, UPS available, New generators can NOT be built but through a loophole you can buy existing licenses for other buildings and have them converted to yours.
Payment not a problem, Creditcards not widely accepted but bank transfers in any common currency is available at any DC (EUR/USD/CNY/HKD - With EURO beeing the main currency besides HKD now, the government heavily surpresses the trading in USD in favour of the Euro at Mainland's pressure).
Communication either problematic or easy depending on the ISP/DC, Chinese speaking staff (Mandarin preffered, but Cantonese does as well) are a good choice but english will work fine most of time also.
Taiwan: Needs ISP license if you run your own IP space/AS, government retains right to confiscate any server hosting "content against the chinese unity or the state of taiwan" which can literally mean anything.
(Though i am not aware of that law ever beeing used).
Communication problematic, native Chinese speaker 100% needed.
Payment hard, national money (NTD) hard to get, Bank account sin USD available but not much used.
Singapore: rather open economy, not a bad choice either but not very cheap (power is a lot more expensive than HK, BW around the same), you need licenses to run your own AS/IPs (you need a local company for this, which is however merely a formal thing - 2 forms, 1 week time and you don't even need to go to SG for it).
With english beeing the main language communication is no issue, Malay, Arabic or Chinese speaking staff are an advantage but not needed.
Payment easy, Bank accounts in Euro available from every EU bank (HSBC and most Austrian/German banks have a presence in SG for example).
Korea (South): Technically military dictatorship even though it looks like a free country from the outside, Internet heavily censored, harsh punishment up to life long imprisonment for pro North Korean propaganda and Porn (10Y+ sentences are the RULE and NOT the exception).
Unless you really know what you do stay out of South Korea.
Power expensive, BW controlled by 3 carriers which are censored.
Communication very hard.
Japan: Currently unstable power supply for the future, national grid partly overloaded with the now shutdown nuclear plants - very expensive power.
BW affordable, licensing not an issue, communication very hard since no one wants to speak english.
Good choice if you have Japanese speaking staff or you can hire someone for it.
Big market for foreigners, local market saturated - 90% of sales would be foreign.
Payment easy since nearly everything can be paid by US bank accounts and virtually any creditcard worldwide.

If these happen in China, you will for sure be shut down in hours or minutes ;p , in HK? not too sure now ;p
what you said "content against the chinese unity or the state of taiwan" is false~
However ,these are illegal here and yea, your sites will be shut down

simple to follow and sounds nothing wrong to me
don;t worry about your contents being hosted here if you do, no one will care what you host most of time~
However, it is indeed a bit harder to find English speaker here compared to HK and SGLast edited by ServerZoo; 02-19-2012 at 12:07 PM.

Taiwan is democratic in all systems and enjoys freedom of speech way too much! If you are local here, you see TV programs and websites "criticize" president and leading party everyday, NO server will be confiscated and NO TV program will be shut down.
Russian TV criticizes the government also and it is an authoritarian state, same in China.
"Feed the masses of sheeps with some information and pseudo freedom to keep them surpressed"
Until a few years ago Taiwan was a full blown dictatorship (though with certain freedom, that is correct) and it will still take years to change this completely.
Besides i think Taiwan is not a good country to host in - i would not like to host in a country that is directly in front of the biggest army in the world and they just wait for a reason to invade it....
