    KnownHost: Choosing a datacenter location?

When I go to purchase a VPS at KnownHost, it appears to ask me where I want it.

    Options:
    • Texas
    • California
    • New Jersey

I've looked at the "Our Networks" (knownhost.com/network.html) section, but I don't really note anything particularly important.

Is there something in particular I should be considering here?
    Geographic distance from myself?

Geographic distance from yourself is a factor. From most of your visitors is a bigger factor. If you / they are in the US, it won't make much difference. If you were in the UK / Europe, you'd get lower latency from NJ. If you were in Asia, you'd get lower latency from CA.

You can Google for the actual data centres to see if any of them have an unusually full history of problems. In general, though, KnownHost have chosen carefully.

You could look at their Network and Hardware Isues Forum, which is helpfully broken down by Data Centre. You'll see that TX has had more issues in recent months than CA. The NJ data centre has only been onstream for KnownHost for a month or two, which is why there are zero network issues for that centre.

Choose the datacenter which is near to your targeted visitors. Normally, there's no much difference if your website won't go oversea.

If your marketing something for visitor's all through the US I would suggest a centralized location. All depends where the primary amount of your traffic is coming from.

The safest would be California in my opinion, especially if you wanted to reach out to Asian visitors and still have decent speed to Europe.

Yes, I would take into consideration your hosting audience/clientele base.

If you're just hosting personal, family and friends then it doesn't really matter. Choose whichever location is physically closer to you.

Personally I would choose either Texas or California.

chose your datacenter accordingly to your visitor, if you targeted in certain area and correct location of datacenter will be much benefit.

your location is not very important. the key thing is your target visitors. you should find hosts in the region where you expect your traffic to come from, or atleast, most of it. this will increase your latency

This might be a bit unorthodox, but I've found them to be a good resource with my questions. Maybe try calling or emailing KnownHost and asking them what they think, too?

    Best answer.

My personal preference would be Texas (USA audience) or NJ (NA/Europe audience).
    California only for serving Asia/Australia.
