    * Intovps review

I got a VPS from intovps.com in their NL location. I have a VPS small from them.

Setup was instant after I paid. Cpanel license was also instantly issued. Full marks to them.

Set the server up along with cpnginx and transferred one site to it. It ran like molasses - It took more than 7 seconds for the page to display. Yucks.

Wrote to intovps.com. They wrote back almost immdiately that they are not seeing a problem and may be I have not optimized it properly.

OK. So last evening, I removed cpnginx and installed Unixy's Varnish plugin. Then setup optimal values for the server. Also I removed MySQL off Cpanel and replaced it with MariaDB. Removed all unneeded packages of the server. Now my site FLIES:-)

Varnish seems to perform very well.

My RAM usage is around 500 MB.

The load currently is 0.08 as per uptime.

    uptime
    11:04:55 up 13:24, 1 user, load average: 0.08, 0.02, 0.00

I ran ab benchmark on it and I get:

    ab -n 2000 -c 1000 http://bmcnoida.org/tag/forgiveness
    This is ApacheBench, Version 2.3 <$Revision: 655654 $>
Copyright 1996 Adam Twiss, Zeus Technology Ltd, http://www.zeustech.net/
Licensed to The Apache Software Foundation, http://www.apache.org/

    Benchmarking bmcnoida.org (be patient)
    Completed 200 requests
    Completed 400 requests
    Completed 600 requests
    Completed 800 requests
    Completed 1000 requests
    apr_socket_recv: Connection timed out (110)
    Total of 1082 requests completed

My question to the experts - What does this result mean? Is my server fine or does it need to be tweaked further?

Overall I am happy with intovps.

Check if you have any failed bean counters by running this in your VPS:

    Code:
    cat /proc/user_beancounters
Check if you have any non-zero values in the last column (failcnt).

And if you have: send an output to support.
On 1000 concurrent requests you most probably have.

    We'll increase the values.

    Thanks again and God bless.

It was a varnish problem. It seems to be eating memory and then dying. Seems to be a well known problem on openvz/virtuzzo.

Support changed some settings for me. I also added the line:

ulimit -s 8192 to set the stack size to 8192 bytes when starting varnish.

    This solution was posted here:

Support also adjusted some values in beancounters.
    Let's see how it goes.

True. I tried it now and it conked.

Moderately heavy load and it conks. This is awful.

Oh well, its time to move to Xen or KVM, I think.

You should use ulimit -s 256 as my colleague set it.

8192 is 8MB per thread, which is too high.

Also, 1000 concurrent (-c 1000 as ab parameter) connections is pretty high. Is your site that popular?

Do you ever get that in real life? Are you expecting your site to be digged/slashdotted/etc?

I am just asking because you may be optimizing for some traffic level that a site may never reach ...
