Question Tiny Xen/KVM VPS for Backup Purposes?

I'm currently using a backup VPS from Hostigation. It's OpenVZ: 64M/96M with 30GB disk space. It's cheap at $4/quarter, but now I'm looking for something else.

One problem is that after only a few months of usage they had problems with their RAID and lost all my data, not that it's totally unacceptable for such a cheap VPS, but still a negative.

But the bigger problem is that the memory provided is not enough to rsync any non-trivial directory. That left me wondering why I can't find such small backup VPSes provided in Xen or KVM, in which I can set up swap space to solve this problem? Performance isn't a problem, I don't mind if my daily backup process takes 2 hours to finish.

I'm looking for a 64MB Xen/KVM VPS with at least 15-20GB disk space, at at most $2-3 a month. BuyVM's $25/year 128MB offering is the best match I have found, but who knows when they will have stock!

If BuyVM can provide a 128MB/15GB KVM VPS for $25/year, surely someone else can do a 64MB/20GB for the same price if not cheaper? Why isn't anyone it seems there to fill this niche?

Location is not a problem as it's a backup VPS, not a customer-facing one.

Bandwidth requirement isn't great either, 100GB/month should be more than enough.

I think you should try some backup service instead of getting you a box. They usually provides RAID support and unmetered bandwidth. You might want to try one from burst:

    These are pretty cheap.

Have you tried looking at Amazon's EC2 free tier (http://aws.amazon.com/free/)? You get unlimited inbound bandwidth and 30GB of storage per month, and you don't have to pay anything as long as you remain within their free tier limits.

I had the same issue with hostigation which I fixed using

    Code:
    rsync --bwlimit=1024 --timeout=60 # etc

Try some backup services, which are already configured to work as backup solutions.

Thank you. I knew about this but was worrying about the high price after one year. However I took a new look and found that with 3-years reservation a micro instance is about as cheap as the cheapest Xen VPS with similar specs in the market... Combined with the reliability of S3 and EBS, this indeed is the best solution even after the free tier expires

I second this suggestion! They're pretty cheap and I guess could give you the service you wanted!

Also I've had reports of sucess with --protocol=29 added to the command, and asking for more burst is always an option

    I would take a look at TinyKVM.com. It's a sub-brand of RamHost.
