Newbie stay away from Gigenet
I pay $300+ for a very powerful dedicated server from gigenet last month after reading some good review about them. After signup, i found that they don't allow the customer to use their dns nameserver. I'm still a newbie about dedicated, although have some experience with softlayer and servint. The setup of private nameserver is complicated to me and their support suck. I deal with more than 6 support, the reply speed is fast but their support don't know what they are doing. Everytime they claim it was solved, i receive the error email the second day. After more than 1 week of trying fix the dns nameserver, they still can't solve the problem.
Maybe they have some very good price and network, but their support suck. If you are a newbie stay away from them. They don't provide any manual guide basic thing for you. You only get the username and password, that's all. You are on your own. Their support can't help you when you have problem. I like their sales guy, but it is difference after u pay the money.

What was the error email you were receiving? What did it say.

Your hostname could not be resolved to an IP address. This means that /etc/hosts is not set up correctly, and/or there is no dns entry ........... bla bla bla
This is a very simple dns problem to them, and they can't even solve within 1 week. Can you count on them ?

Yes, my next bill is coming soon end of this month. I might cancel the server anytime. Ah .... one more thing, they store your credit card info and don't allow you to edit it. A dangerous signal, usually i will change the credit card number etc before i cancel the server to avoid the hosting company continue to charge me, in case they play some dirty trick.

I request for the cancelling procedure yesterday, but the billing department seems to ignore me, maybe they don't work on weekend.

They have about 4 level of manage. I got the lowest basic manage that is free. Yes, i'm planning to hire an experience admin to do some tweak and setting for me. Just a one time job, like service your car once a year.

Management isn't a one time job it's a 24.7 job. Security flaws and exploits are constantly released, drives fail that require monitoring to catch them before they do if you can, scripts become out of date, ddos attacks etc.
Seems odd that they couldn't fix your issue though. Gigenet has a member on this forum, hopefully they can chime in.
Yeah they don't really do weekend billing and it will probably be dealt with Monday. It's actually pretty common.

Not require management, just need some basic tweek etc. Gigenet have DDOS protect. I just run some wordpress only. Gigenet can add ~$150 p/m to get all those things above, but they disappointed me. They seems perfect to me, but it is too good to be true.
How to detect drive fail ? Can i do it by myself ? Gigenet just said they have raid array monitor only. My server is on Raid1, but the rest of HDD(HDD 3,4,5,6) will be no raid.

It seems to me that this is more about you than Gigenet. Previous providers such as Servint and Softlayer mangaged everything for you, now you are with an unmanaged provider who is not going to hold your hand like the previous ones did.
You had a specific requirement that you waited until after you signed up to ask if they would allow. The simple solution of course would have been to ask before you jumped in.

That's a good way to get compromised.
You need an admin to do proactive work, or at the very minimum monthly work, to stay up to date on security flaws then implment the necessary patches. A server isn't like a car that you can come back to a few times a year and perform routine maintenance. Security threats are ever changing and failure to stay on top of them will leave you in an embarrassing situation.RACK911 Labs | Penetration Testing | https://www.RACK911Labs.ca

I always had a great time at Gigenet, so I'm surprised to see you having these kind of issues. In the end it's clear that you need a fully managed server, but from what I can see DNS management is part of the free package that comes with every server?

I would go with hiring a managed administrator to manage your server or migrate your server over to a Managed Server provider that offers Managed Servers. You would be in better shape and overall have a much better experience with the hosting provider.

sai2,
Before i start let me say i am sorry you are having issues with our service. My name is Jeremy and i am the Technical Support Manager for GigeNET. I would like to work with you to get your issues resolved for you. If you could please contact me at jeremy.may@gigenet.com i will work with you to make sure that all of your issues get corrected. Also i would like to say that having worked for a few other companies i can say that none of them provide you with a open use dns server for use with your domains. they all require you to setup private name servers. Only in shared hosting is there use of a common dns for customers on a shared service platform. On the subject of our management packages. This is not a fully manage service, we offer you a set number of hours to help with the install and trouble shooting of software on your server. This time also includes upgrade of system software and other installed packages. If you need a fully manage offering i would suggest contacting Steve over at rack911. He would be able to provide you with the full management you are looking for. Again I hope to be able to correct your issues for you and please feel free to contact me for further assistance.

I only know the wiredtree that do what you guys so call the fully managed.
IMHO, some fully managed trying to charge you a very high fee $150 p/m and even worst hire some fresh graduate to ruin your server. Most of the time they run on automatic system to check your server, it cost them nothing very month. I don't mind to pay $50-$99 for the service, but over $100 is very expensive. Why iTunes music is so popular ...... fair price.
I'm still looking for some fully managed server if you have anything good to recommend. My budget is $300-400, Unmetered or 30TB Bandwdith, overage must low.
Thank you for your time.
