Powermonster.net/ birdhosting review

I have been with this company for 2.5 years. I have hardly any issues. Although I do not watch it 24/7 but pingdom does not show any recent down time and shows an uptime of 99%.

Any way recently do to both financial issues and down time with downtownhost (Hard drive failed) I started the process of moving things all over to my account with powermonster.net. Do to my site being so large I opened a ticket to see if they could move the site for me. After talking about my site and the requirements it was decided to open a vds account with them. Which I think is the same or like to vps. Basically I have full root access and my own little mini server on one of their cloud servers. Interestingly enough the vds account is actually cheaper then the semi dedicated account with downtownhost so it will save me money.

The support staff were very helpful in moving the site over and was even helpful in setting up the server with every thing I needed. I think that ticket has the name of most if not all their support staff and every one of them is friendly and helpful.

I am still waiting for the dns to propagate but the site is otakuplayground.com.

It is sad to leave downtownhost as they are not a bad host in fact they are a great how and will remain on my great host list. The hard drive issue was fixed. Oh and pingdom does say the percent of up time for them is 97.6%.

A little over 3 years the first time and not yet a year this time. There was a year or so break between those 2 accounts.

99% seems awfully low to me. Are you sure it's accurate? Maybe its the result of a one time freak accident that resulted in significant downtime?

Is this VDS fully managed?

I am not sure. Honestly I am not even sure what the difference is.

Here are screen shots from pingdom.

Glad you found a provider that seems to do the trick for you. Do keep us posted though with a more detailed review on powermonster in a month or so

You should probably find out. Unmanaged means the host is only responsible for network and hardware. Everything else is up to you, including all configuration and security.

VPS hosting is very different from shared hosting. There is a lot more responsibility involved and while hosts define "managed" differently, it still comes down to if you want to shoulder all the responsibility of managing your own server or have your host help you.

I just sent a ticket asking about that.

I know they set up every thing for me. They even help me set up the google mx records so my email continues to work.

So did you change providers just because of a HD problem or was it some thing else?

I was just told it was unmanaged. So that must be why it does not cost very much.

I'm going out on a limb here but isn't that a bad thing? You're referring to PowerMonster/BirdHosting, not DTH right?

Unless of course you're an experienced server admin or know someone who is.

Thanks I am hopping it is not to hard. They did say I can ask them any question I want. They did send me info on how to install a firewall as they told me I needed one of those. They did install every thing else for me though like the directadmin and centos.

I actually had fun doing the dns set up. Which was harder said then done as I was thinking it would be really hard.

Oh and to answer RossMan DTH does have vps but when you look at their site it is fully managed. Actually when I signed up for DTH I did actually sign up for VPS but do to confusion about how to set it up and manage it they just put me on semi dedicated for the same price as the vps.
