We never originally intended Minecraft hosting at all but we had a few VPS customers request installation of it. We then started getting direct emails asking for specific Minecraft packages so the company was relaunched including a Minecraft host offering ... and now it's our most popular product.

It certainly presents a very different set of challenges to offering shared / VPS hosting. The clients tend to have a lot more support requests such as plugin installation and if you don't manage your servers well you very quickly find yourself maxing out on RAM and CPU. It's certainly been a learning process for the company. Also a lot of the clientele are under 18 -- you need to ensure that if this is the case you get the parents to make the order. We've had a couple of orders that have gone through where we've later been (quite rightly) contacted by the parents and had to provide a refund.

My main advice to anyone looking to get into this market is to make sure you spend plenty of time getting to know how Minecraft servers work -- play around a little running one on a spare VPS or something. You'll need to ensure you have plenty of RAM and *fast* disks if you don't want lag. And don't "fill" a box, thinking that you've got loads of spare RAM /disk space. Remember your clients resource usage will creep as they increase the size of their world data and start loading lots of plugins. And tweak the hell out of your Java configuration so that it's optimized for Minecraft.

    Minecraft

They can use lots of memory though! Be careful not to oversell!

It's a fantastic game and it's only going to get bigger and bigger as more mods become available. There's definitely a big market for it.

Last I heard, Minecraft was going to be available on XBox. That's a huge statement if anyone's considering entering the market. I host a few Minecraft servers, and the game sure is a resource hog. It's a more "Breaking Even" niche because competition is really driving down prices. Money can be made by having value added services.

    Minecraft Installation: $x.xx
    Minecraft Control Panel: $xx.xx/mo
    Minecraft Bukkit Installation: $x.xx
    Minecraft Configuration: $x.xx
    etc etc,.

Also, kids are running their own "Hosting Companies" reselling other companies servers / VPSes. The kids are the under cutters, so beware when entering this market.

Yes, it's really terrible... They compete to see who can charge the least because they aren't even in the market to make money.

I'll agree on this, it's quite frustrating to hear the horror stories some of our clients have had in the past. I mean, do you really expect to get a 1GB server for only $10 when the cost /GB on a dedicated server is significantly higher? Plus the added costs for licensing, taxes, and even staff?

I don't even understand why these people even bother..

"For fun" or "for experience" <---- I've heard both reasons from the culprits.

I expect that Minecraft, being a game that seems to hit the online equivalent of 'new vintage', will eventually fade down to a cult following after a few years... however I expect that 10 years from now there will still be groups of people passionate about the game looking for servers to host it on!

Definitively money to be made, and fast money as this is a special service that is in high demand with less competition than you'll find for regular hosting services.

I'm actually providing support services to one and have spoken to a few others, they all say sales are booming all with free advertising a word of mouth.

"hey cool you have your own minecraft server! where can I get one!?"

You cannot oversell any services as minecraft is a resource hog, most of the people are ignorant kids who ask a lot of questions for support.. But then they tell all their friends how to get a minecraft server..

    Good luck.
The web hosting market will never die. Virtual environments are forever the future and easily adapt to change. Welcome to the world wide web!

There's actually a ton of competition... New hosts pop up weekly as well. And believe me, there is definitely overselling going on. One of the most popular hosts (due to low prices and good Google placement) oversells like crazy. I'd be willing to bet that 25-50% of our clients are transfers from them; each of them has a horror story to tell.
