Unhappy 1&1 Nightmare... what to do?

About a year ago, I registered two domains through 1&1. (I know, huge mistake.)

I eventually decided I didn't need them and submitted the cancellation forms on 1&1's website. I thought that was the end of that. Unfortunately, today I received an email from them with an invoice for the domains stating my card would be charged in 7 days. I cancelled that card months ago, so I worry now they'll send debt collectors.

I can no longer log in to their website, either, I had wrote down my customer number and password when I registered the domains and that number/password won't work.

Their support isn't currently open and I doubt they'd be much help anyways, but I'm definitely concerned. I don't think it's any accident that in the emails they sent stating they'd received my cancellation do not specifically mention the domain I requested cancellation of.

To make matters worse, they have on file my old address in another state where I no longer live so if anything is sent by US Mail I will not receive it and will be unable to respond.

What is the best action now? 1&1 is just a sickening company to deal with.

Contact their support. You have to get in touch with them somehow to let them know.

Hopefully you have proof of cancellation. They will definitely get that taken care of for you.

Apparently you did not also cancel the hosting package

1and1 has excellent FAQs. Apparently you did not read the ones about transferring Domain Names to another Registrar. 1and1 Domain Name registrations come with a Hosting Package. They emphasize in the FAQs that in addition to Transferring the Domain to another Registrar, one must also Cancel the Hosting Package.

I did this with one .com domain during 2011 and will hopefully be successful at it, with the one remaining domain name I have at 1and1, during February 2012.

Apparently you did not read the thread, he is mentioning that he purchased 2 domain and which to cancel it after that. What wrong with the hosting? what wrong with the FAQ?

Hello DanJo: Yes, I did read the thread. And, U.S. English is my Native language.

He had 2 domain names registered at 1and1. They come with a Hosting Package.

There is nothing wrong with the 1and1 FAQs. They are excellent.

The FAQ about Transferring a Domain Name to another Registrar is very clear, that after doing the Transfer. one must then Cancel the Hosting Package for the Domain Name. If one does not do that, 1and1 will continue to Bill the customer.....

Yes, I still have one Domain Name registered at 1and1. Hopefully will get that one transferred to another Registrar in February. If I can do that, then, after the Transfer, I will cancel the Hosting Package for it.

I went for a VPS with them years ago and cancelled a week later, support is crap, you call them but it's not free and email supports takes 3-4 days to reply. I would say, good luck.

Read other clients' or customers' testimonials. Try to contact the current customers of the web host provider of your choice and see if they are satisfied with the kind of services being rendered by the web host company.
