newbie to site with a hosting question

Hi All,

So confused...

Signed up with rackspace - old developer couldnt configure it properly - and it was hard to figure out. Managed solution was too expensive.

Signed up with hostgator - no solr search - and worked out i need it.

Signed up with drupion.com - looks good, reasonable - almost looks to good to be true. Did my research couldn't find anything good, or bad about it. Signed up - my new developer said it wasnt user-friendly and didn't have the necessary php memory. So i cancelled it - then got into a convo with drupion, who said developer hadn't even used 2% of php memory and had never contacted their support. Also, they would upload the site for him and he did it himself..(new developer is clueless about any other hosting except hostgator)

My developer has signed up with Acquia - great - but $350 for a year to be paid upfront - he is on the 30day trial right now. I realise that drupion is more in the long run, but i can pay that by installments and overall they offer more...

Any advice please? Anyone heard of/used drupion before? Drupion any good? Should I bite the bullet and pay acquia? My preference would be rackspace - but aint got the cash nor the experience to go down that route - also, is it really that good?

Thanks!

Sounds like you are getting a great deal of mis-information, are you going to be paying the $350.00 dollar yearly fee to your developer or directly to the web host? Also, exactly what type of site is this? Are you currently getting any traffic?

Yeah, I read this a little while ago and $350 per year sounded a little steep. It looks like Acquia specializes in Drupal hosting but I still don't see the extra expense.

I would think the developer here should be able to work with any cPanel hosting if he's been using HG

Question

Sounds l8ike your developer is a newbie himself. Are you needing a server or VPS? $350 is too much for regular hosting. We are on the high side of the pricing scale and try to offer great support but we are nowhere close to $350 a year for standard hosting.

Either your developer isn't experienced at all or he has an affiliate plan or such with HostGator so he will make the extra money. HostGator is a less expensive host, don't know their current rates but they are lower than us. Sounds like everyone has tried to help this guy and he doesn't want the help so he is either enexperienced or trying to take you to the cleaners to line his pockets.
Rackspace is great but they mainly deal in dedicated servers and I doubt you need an entire server, it would be a lot more than $350 also.

One option might be: To ask your developer for all of your files. If he was paid to build your website and has done so the work now belongs to you. You can then find hosting on your own and any decent host will be happy to assist you in getting you set up with an account that will meet your needs and getting your files uploaded, installed and running correctly.

Personally, I would suggest to search reviews here on this forum and find a host that way, you can find an awesome host on here that's reputable with good reviews, that way you know they will be reliable.

I am confused with your information as well, you're paying $350 for your hosting or developer? In WHT, you may find alot of provider with good review and you may check with them.

by the way, may I know what kind of site you are doing and any traffic on it?

$350/year is reasonable for managed VPS hosting.

But it sounds like your developer is incompetent. ("Playing developer" instead of actually being one.)

Acquia is basically a new host: http://www.masshightech.com/stories/...aises-15M.html
But it passes my smell test.
Same for Drupion -- everything seems to be in order, passes a basic smell test.
Don't take those as "reviews", however -- just initial observations.

Your choices in hosting don't currently scare me. But the dev/admin does. I think you need a new developer.

I ask the forum admins to remove my account if we can't elaborate in the discussions relevant to our company. I had commented in the name of Drupion in this thread, my message has been deleted and I was warned about posting irrelevant message. Quite strange, since I did not started this thread, it contains some comments and questions about our company and we are not allowed to post here.

I said nothing else but expressed our readiness to provide our answers to any questions regarding Drupion.com. Quite strange and not welcoming at all. We rather stay away from this kind of resource with hostile attitude to hosting companies, which want to just answer to the forum users' questions about themselves.

Once again, please just remove my account. Thanks!

Not trying to be mean.

But If you no longer wish to post here, or visit here again. Then it's as simple as logging out and never visiting the site again.

Like others have said, you are overpaying. $350/year is way too much for standard shared hosting. Besides, what control panel are they using?

You may wish to check out the web hosting advertising forum for better deals. Good luck!
