Up here in Edmonton, AB, Canada.. It's been the warmest winter I swear.. It's snowed maybe twice, we've gotten more RAIN than snow (that freezes at night hurray!) and the temperature seems to be around 32F/0c All the time... I went to get coffee the other day in shorts and sandles haha

Same in southern New Hampshire for me.... It's actually worrying me to be honest. It snowed today but I have not seen anything like this for my location. Seems to be less the past 3 years.

Nothing odd. In this area (Yakutsk) -50 Celsius and lower are more or less standard in winter. In the village om Omyakon (pole of cold) the average winter temperature is around -60 Celsius with days even colder. Happens every winter. It's nothing uncommon. This area is known as the coldest permanently inhabited area in the world, with Omyakon being titled the "pole of cold" when it comes to permanently inhabited places. Yakutsk is a vibrant city with over 200000 people despite its isolation and extreme cold. Cars are having the engine running non-stop in winter, because if you turn it off it won't re-start until spring comes.

The road between Yakutsk and Omyakon is about 1000 km through the middle of nowhere, with hardly any other car and hardly any village on the way. Drivers doing this route would die if their car broke down because help was almost inexistant and the cold would not be bearable, hence these days those who need to take this route do so in group with several cars joining each other : if one breaks down, the driver can continue the route as passenger with another car rather than waiting for the unlikely passing car offering help (which, due to the isolation, would be unlikely to occur and freezing to death is almost certain if you take this route on your own and your car doesn't hold it)

On YouTube there's several documentaries on Yakutsk and Omyakon, it's great viewing. The extreme north of Russia has been fascinating me since I was a child. Towns like Dikson, Tiksi, ... That's the true edge of the world: extremeley isolated and cut off from the outside world, and extreme cold. I'd love to spend just one year in a town like that as the experience must be unique. However, the isolation of these towns makes getting there an extremely costly trip, and that's without having accomodation arranged.

So, what else is new? Yakutst / Vostok Station are the coldest human inhabited places on earth, more or less well known.

Interesting fact, the worlds coldest capital based on averages is Ottawa, Canada where I usually live. There have been a few instances where the windchill has approached -40 ... good times.

    Edit:

Can't seem to find a source... although it's pretty popular on Google which is good enough for me.

You should all come live here in Western Australia. Beautiful 30 degree Celsius summer days all summer long. Never gets cold here, not even in winter.

I personally love the cold, other then the isolation and probably the lack of stores I'm used to, it wouldn't be too much of an issue. If you ever see someone shoveling snow in a t-shirt and shorts in the winter time in New Hampshire it's probably me Too bad the family likes to be this thing called warmth :/

this is a matter beyond liking cold. see, what the guy says - your car never starts again if the engine stops, if you are stranded on the road you freeze, a lot of other stuff. its beyond habitable imo.
