Rsync and website stop responding but load is fine

I have a quad core server, load is about 5. Sometimes when there is a lot of disk i/o going on, rsync will stop itself and when trying to restart it, it becomes stuck at the part where it calculates how many files there are to rsync over. I also get packet loss on a secondary IP address but only that secondary IP address is affected, others are fine.

    Any idea to solve this?

add more /faster drives, move to a raid based setup, check on the timings of the rsync backup job.

i mean if you only have traffic peaks, you can schedule the backups to occur during non peak hours, and therefore there will be less i/o.

Definitely look into doing RAID-10 at least if you're suffering this issue. SSD and SAS drives can help and ultimately scheduling the rsync off-peak would be the best option to go with.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I would also suggest to make sure that rsync is both at least of version 3.0 on both sides. It'll vastly improve performance as it doesn't need to calc EVERYTHING first then send.
