High Server Load? Do I need a better processor

If my server load jumps up, to like 80-90-100% does that mean I need a better processor?

Maybe. Or it could be a number of things like swap, RAM, queries. Find out what's causing the loads to make that determination. When you say %, though, that's not really load. What does top say when the %'s are high?

as long as the load is short and then load goes down quickly i see nothing wrong with it.

Then you need to find out what is causing the high loads. Not doing that and just guessing you need more processor, RAM, etc. is an expensive way to troubleshoot. If you are not sure how to find it, ask your host for their input and help.

Thats very high, are you the only user on this server or is a hosting box?

Just as an example, one of my best hosting companies has an average Server Load of 1.93 with nearly 300 cpanel users on the box.

As said, you are going to need to find out what the cause of load is before taking any steps to fix it. Which is going to require some knowhow of the operating system you are running or someone that does.

Use `top` and `dstat` utilities to gain more insight into why the load is so high. If wait (wa) is high generally you have a storage bottleneck somewhere.

As others have suggested, I would look into the cause of the high CPU usage before spending additional money on upgrading the servers CPU. What are you using this box for?

Only site on the server. It's an 8GB RAM, Intel CoreQuad 9300
