A question about Bandwidth

Hi,
I'm new to this web hosting stuff and I'm trying to figure it all out so bare with my stupid questions. I'm trying to figure out how companies like www.unitedcolo.com can offer 1U colocation and 500GB transfer a month for only $50. I've looked at prices for a T1 and they cost $500+ a month but yet UnitedColo offers T1 bandwidth for only $50 a month. How is this possible?

I don't really understand your post. How can it only cost $50 for a 1.5mb/s connection?

There is significant difference between telco-grade connections (i.e. T1, T3, etc) and datacenter ethernet drops.

Usually telco-grade connections have much expensive port cost at the ISP-end, as well as local loop fee to the telephone company. UCG however looks like they have a GigE drop from Williams and wireworks. gigabit Ethernet (or anything-Ethernet) has much lower port cost, and pretty much the $$$ part is just the pure bandwidth in bits/s rate.

UCG does not offer 50/mo plan anymore, unless they suddenly changed their plans again.. I believe the cheapest is 99/mo

Thanks for the help! UCG does provide $50 plans again, they change between $50 and $99 every couple weeks. How do GigE drops work?

Sorry for asking all these stupid questions. I'm new.

ethernet drops.. just like the way you connect your computer to the LAN.

you take one piece of cat5 (or fiber in Gigabit ethernet) and plug one end to the UCG's router, and plug other end to the ISP's router.

and then you coordinate with the ISP for routing, etc, etc...
