For a very small basic brochureware site I've been asked for a suggestion for a free statistics counter/tracker? Similar to flagcounter.com, but with more detailed statistics offered, and for those statistics to be available only to someone with a username/password.

Also, because it's a basic HTML site, it should ideally be through a tiny image placed onto the page (this is preferred to JavaScript for this site) rather than a server-side PHP or other script.

Had never heard of piwik before but that looks great for my other projects! However for this one project I'm looking for a solution with no server-side required on our end.

Piwik recommends Arvixe if you don't want to host it yourself. I don't have any experience with them.

Unless I'm missing something your suggestion isn't free but $4 monthly. Any free suggestions for something like this?

That's correct, and nope, sorry. I've only had experience with Google Analytics and self-hosted Piwik. But you could of course sign up for an account with a basic (PHP + MySQL, cronjobs aren't a requirement) free webhost that supports PHP and MySQL and install Piwik yourself.

Statcounter.com for me, I use it on several sites.

Easy installation, just put a piece of code in your pages; you can choose to display either their logo, either counter, either to be invisible.

As you required, username/password are required to see the stats, and you can create several users with different roles.

It's free of charge; only limitation of free version is that it stores last 500 visits - once you have more visitors, the oldest entry is replaced with the newest one. I bypass it by simply downloading the statistics when it approaches 500 visitors.

I am using Google Analytics and eXtreme tracking. I think that these are the best traffic counters.

Statcounter is a useful tool in this regard. It provides you real time updates. Installation is also very easy.

The other stats checker like Google analytics, hitstats are also good and free.
