How to begin with a fresh VPS ?

Hello everyone,

i am just eager to learn managing and securing etc on a unmanaged VPS with a basic start of centOS 5.6 (32 bit) can anyone tell me where to begin ?

i have no idea what to begin with i have just a VPS with CentoS on it.

so can anyone give me a start on it and let me know some place or anything from where i can start and go to end on learning this.

Thanks in advance.

Check out:

http://library.linode.com/

Even if your new VPS is not on linode, you can still read their library. It has many, many step-by-steps for setting up and running a VPS.

You can do a speedtest by downloading a test file at a location near your server.
You can try this one:
Code:
wget http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
It will give you a speed in MB/s. Gbit lines should give you speeds within 90MB/s to 100Mb/s.

You are responsable to secure your vps. You can search online on google for server hardening. Changing your ssh port and limiting ssh logins.

The linode library shared above is a good way to start.

most of control panels are installing mysql + php + mysql +Apache or ngix as well

the free control panel is like webmin or kloxo , and in these control panels you can
point your domain name and dns to this new server ip

N.B: if you want to install any control panel, the vps must be fresh without installing any services like MySQL Apache and other....
