burst.net or buyvm or...?

I'm looking for a quality VPS but am somewhat budget constrained. I know, "pick two" :-)

I have about 30GB/month of traffic I serve, mostly static media files (all legit, no pirating here). Additionally I have about a dozen wordpress blogs - mostly friends/famiy - and some small community things (wiki, forum, etc.)

My current host is not the greatest (instability) and I'd like to move to someone better. What I don't like about my current host is the slow support (had a situation where my node went down and it was 2 days before I heard back from them) and very inconsistent performance. Sometimes my VPS feels like it's as fast as my home PC...more often, it...takes...a...long...time...for...shell...commands...to...execute...

Hoped-for specs:
  • Linux
  • Unmanaged
  • anywhere in the US
  • 40-50GB of disk
  • At least 512MB of RAM. 1024MB or 1024/2048 would be better but is not completely vital.
  • reasonable performance - doesn't need to be a speed demon but can't grind...down...to...molassess...in...january...
  • Do not need a lot of bandwidth.
  • Virt technology is not crucial, though I get the sense that Xen or KVM is less oversold.
  • Under $20/month, preferably under $15.

I see a number of providers with good reputation in this range...except for the disk. I'd go to someone like linode but unfortunately, I have too much stuff to squeeze down to 20G.

I see buyvm.net and burst.net are in this price range. What do you guys think of them? Anyone else I should consider?

I read some threads here and people say "check the offers" but there are million @WOW@!!! offers !!! there and they hurt my eyes, and there are a lot of names I've never heard of

If you're looking for the best performance, find a Xen provider using a RAID10 setup and you shouldn't have any IO issues.

I've been using a BuyVM 128MB VPS out of curiosity.
I set it up with a small footprint, and it's running fine. (Kloxo + lighttpd + WP)
Stock may be a problem -- they are limited, and sell out often.

Most BurstNET complaints I see are undeserved (fault of the person complaining).

I consider BuyVM the lowest-dollar Linux budget host. Same for BurstNET, but for Windows.
Is there any reason you've narrowed it down to just these two?
With that budget, there's quite a few good hosts that you could pick from.

+1 to BuyVM, they're continuously releasing stock, but due to the hard drive shortage at the moment, it may be a while.

I have a BuyVM 128MB VPS, and I have to say their support is good, the server itself is rock solid, and the network seems fast. I also had a VPS at Burst.net earlier this year, and had the server in the California data center. I had absolutely no problem with the VPS, and gave it up only because I'm currently unemployed and had to reduce costs.

BuyVM is usually out of stock, but they would probably be slightly better, unless you need a different geographical location; their servers are in California, while Burst has DCs in California, Pennsylvania and Florida. BuyVM is a much smaller company than Burst, so you get a small company feel from their support. But, I have to say, that Burst.net's support was always fast and effective for me. If BuyVM is out of stock, I would not hesitate to say that Burst.net is good as well.

All this is assuming you know they are really, really unmanaged, and know how to deal with that (your original post seems to indicate you are on a VPS now). Most of the complaints about Burst.net seem to be from folks that don't know what they are getting into, and then get frustrated with the "Sorry, that's your problem" answer they get from support.

I'm not sure I'd recommend Burst.net, their network has a few bad reviews around WHT. BuyVM seems like a good choice.

Good luck finding a budget provider of our size and stability that doesn't...

**Most** of the complaints are due to user error, although a few were valid regarding the LA network speeds, and I remember one regarding reverse DNS that was true. Three valid, and how many erroneous?

Most of the other complaints are from people who should not be buying an un-managed VPS, get in over their head, and decide that saying "I blew it!" is a lot harder than accusing Burst.net of nefarious intent.

That is hardly a realistic measuring stick with the level of chicken littles.

4 out of 5 vps used in a cluster for centminmod.com use buyvm.net VPSes and they definite run find for me. I like the fact they offer an ample bandwidth quota and the fact all VPS out of box include an internal private IP which I can use to connect each of my VPS for variable stuff like haproxy load balancing, separate web and db servers, mysql replication etc etc without incurring additional bandwidth charges or eating into my bandwidth quota.

Unfortunately, haven't used burst so no personal experience.

BuyVM is a fine choice. Have been with them for several months now and it's been superb.

Check out Secure Dragon too. I haven't been with Secure Dragon very long, but so far it's been great.

I actually have noticed that myself recently. A lot of recommendations for them, you click the link, and they are OOS as usual.

I suppose that is good they are in such high demand. Bad for new business.
