If I have a dedi server with Windows and wanted to upgrade from a 8mb to 12mb ram package (for example) can most hosting companies migrate everything across, including any apps you might have installed? Or do you have to reinstall all your apps?
Thanks,
Jon

You mean 8gb to 12gb?
It should bear no problems upgrading RAM.
The things that might require Wwindows re-activation are motherboard changes, processor changes and/or some other significant changes.

When you add memory to the server, you do not need to reinstall software.

As long as your current server supports the additional RAM, then it should not take anything more than scheduling a time to take the server offline and physically install the additional RAM. However, if your server is maxed out at 8GB of RAM like most 775 socket motherboards, then you will probably have to look into a beefier server that supports larger amounts of RAM.

Hello Jon,
The only time this would make a difference is if you were changing bit (32 and 64). But since you are starting at 8GB, then you must have 64bit. 32bit only recognizes just under 4GB of RAM.

Windows Enterprise 32bit + PAE enabled ... work without problems with more than 4 GB of ram.

There are hosting companies offer migration, and there are not, subject to the hosting company that you deal with.
When there is migration needed, normally all the webfiles including databases will be moved over. You do not need to re-install software.

I now have my first ever dedi! I see there are loads of Windows updates. Am I meant to do those myself? I wasn't supposed to on my VPS.

I would like to suggest you to contact support section of the data center or hosting company you purchased server from, they will assist you if you need to run the upgrades or they will perform the upgrades in weekends or off-peak hours.

Most server boxes these days support more than 12GB RAM. Upgrade is really easy: shut the server down, take out 8GB RAM, put in 12GB RAM, power the server back. It should be done in 5 minutes. You do not need to change anything in software. Since your server already has 8GB RAM, you must have a 64-bit Windows or an Enterprise Windows so increase your server RAM to 12GB is easy. If your server has only 2GB RAM and your Windows is 32-bit non Enterprise version, then upgrade from 2GB to 6GB is quite a work. You will need to change OS in this case.
